The Rotary Club of York and the Engineering Society of York are pleased to announce that we are working together to solicit applications for FOURROTARY SCHOLARSHIPS and FOUR ENGINEERING SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIPS to be awarded this spring for the academic year starting this fall. The Rotary scholarships arestrongly based on the student’s academic record and class rank will be given primary consideration. Therefore, we ask that you encourage only students with class rank of 1 through 10 to apply. The Engineering Society Scholarships are strongly based on academics and extra-curricular activities and we encourage all high performing future engineers to apply. The committee will review the applications received and select the top students to be interviewed for these scholarships.

The James C. & Carrie B. Bush Scholarship is $1000 per academic year for four years of undergraduate study. Only students attending a fully accredited four-year degree-granting institution are qualified for the Bush Scholarship.

The Edwin P. Mangold Scholarship is a one-time award of $1000 and is open to students attending a 2-year or 4-year, fully accredited degree-granting institution.

The Sanford M. Kranich Scholarship is a one-time award of $500 and is open to students attending a 2-year or 4-year fully accredited degree-granting institution.

The Charles W. Diehl, Jr. Scholarship is a one-time award and is open to students attending a 4-year fully accredited degree-granting institution. Students in the Engineering Field and/or graduates of WilliamPennSenior High School will be given special consideration for this scholarship. Amount of award is determined by the fund’s donor advisee each year and may vary. (Anticipated amount of $1000 - $3000)

The Engineering Society of York generally gives out four $2,000 Edgar P. Kable Scholarships each year. Each recipient in good standing will then receive $2,000/year for the following three years ($8,000 total). Only students enrolled in an engineering discipline are eligible.

The following criteria are applicable for the Rotary Scholarships:

  1. The scholarships are for the academic year beginning August 2011. The Bush Scholarship is awarded for the term of the student’s undergraduate enrollment subject to yearly review of academic performance but for no more than 4 years.
  2. Preference will be given to students who will graduate from a YorkCountyHigh School or are YorkCounty residents but is not restricted to such. International students and relatives of Rotarians may apply.
  3. Scholarships areawarded without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, or national origin.
  4. Thesemerit-based scholarshipsare based on both financial need and academic ability. It is strongly based on the academic record and class rank will be given primary consideration. Students must show that they are working to their potential within sole discretion of the committee.
  5. An interview with the York Rotary Club Student Loan Committee will be required and scheduled at the convenience of both the committee and student(s).
  6. The York Rotary Student Loan Program and the Scholarship Program are not mutually exclusive.
  7. If the student withdraws from the college or university, the scholarship (based on per cent refunded) shall be returned to the Rotary Club of York by the university as usual policy.

The following criteria are applicable for the Edgar P. Kable Scholarships:

  1. Must be a York County resident.
  2. Must enroll in an engineer degree granting institution.
  3. Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, or national origin.
  4. Applicants must attach a one page essay to this application on the topic of “Why you want to be an engineer, orwhat being an engineer means to you or why you should be considered for this scholarship".
  5. Scholarship money will only be made available for as long as you remain an engineering student in good standing, but no longer than 4 years.

Deadline to apply is March 31,but do not hold application for the Student Aid Report (SAR) from the FAFSA – submit when received from federal government.

We would appreciate your help in selecting students to apply for this scholarship to honor our former Rotarians who have made bequests to help the students of YorkCounty attain their educational and professional goals.

If a student from your school receives a scholarship, you will be invited to attend the Rotary Club meeting with the student(s) and parents for the award. James C. & Carrie B. Bush – Rotary Scholarship Fund (2000)

Jim and Carrie were born in YorkCounty and graduated from YorkHigh School (WilliamPennSenior High School). Jim played football for York High. He went to F & MCollege but had to drop out due to severe asthma, a lifelong problem for him. He was employed by York Ice Machines as a draftsman, as District Manager for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of PA, and worked for York Builders Assoc. Jim was a lifelong sports enthusiast. He refereed football on high school, college, and professional levels. For 30 years, he was the Timing Official for York High football games. For 12 years, Jim was a member of the York County School Board. While on the Board, he was also head of the Athletic Council. He was designated Life Member of the York County Fair Association, working in the livestock division (pigeons, etc.) His wife, Carrie, worked in arts and crafts for many years for the Fair and was a gifted artisan. She did all types of needlework and ceramics. Jim was a long time Rotarian (44 years) as well as a member of Blue Lodge, Tall Cedars. Carrie was a member of Eastern Star. Carrie preceded Jim in death and Jim died on April 12, 1999.

Edwin P. Mangold Scholarship Fund (2008)

Ed Mangold was a graduate of WilliamPennHigh School (1945) and a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He was Vice President of York Penn Machinery Company in York for 30 years prior to his retirement and Board Chairman and Vice President of Clean Way Professional Cleaning Services. Ed was a member of the York Rotary Club only 6 years but showed his dedication and support as a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and Major Donor. He was also active in his church and many other community and social organizations in York. Ed died on November 26, 2006.

Sanford M. Kranich Scholarship Fund (2008)

Sandy Kranich was a Real Estate agent in York for more than 25 years, retiring in 1999. He was very active as a PennState alumni, and The Sandy Kranich Celebrity Golf Benefit is an annual event in York which raises money for the children’s charity, The Second Mile. Sandy was inducted in to the York County Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and a charter member of the York Quarterback Club. Sandy was a 41 year member of the Rotary Club of York, along with many other civic and community organizations. Sandy was an avid collector, not of things….but of friends. Sandy died on October 10, 2000.

Charles W. Diehl, Jr. Scholarship (2008)

Charles W. Diehl, Jr. was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of York prior to his death. This scholarship was established through the donor-advised Diehl Fund managed by the York County Community Foundation. The Committee gives preference to students graduating from William Penn High School and/or engineering majors.

The Engineering Society of York’s Edgar P. Kable Scholarship (1956)

Edgar P. Kable was President of The Engineering Society of York in 1929 and donated $100,000 for scholarship in 1956. He was theGeneral Manager of The York Water Company for 36 years. His nephew, John Kable, Jr., donated an additional $1,000,000 to the Fund in 2000.The mission of The Engineering Society of York is to promote the field of engineering in the York community.
