b.Rotary International – Rotary in Syria

The Damascus Club established in 1938 (before Syria was formed) was the first Club in the world to conduct meetings in Arabic. Its major projects were combating malaria and illiteracy. By the end of 1959 there were four clubs. Confusion arose as to Rotary and Freemasons being associated which led in 1965 to the prohibition of Freemasons belonging to Rotary, and the banning of Rotary a couple of years later.

Raffle: Drawn by guest speaker Greg and won by Acting Sergeant at Arms Frank Flavell.

Guest Speaker – Greg Dowling, Copper Club. Introduced by Graham Morris.

Greg trained at the Victoria Golf Club in Melbourne and in 1980 qualified as a golf professional. Greg also studied journalism and became a professional journalist making contributions to golfing magazines and via Twitter. Greg is married with two children who are now adults. This has allowed Greg to spread his wings and take up new challenges. Having made the 900k trip the Copper Coast on Australia Day, Greg enjoyed the hospitality of Graham and Fiona for the first couple of weeks as he settled into our area.

Highlights of Greg’s career have included:

meeting five times Open Championship winner, Peter Thompson

running a corporate day for the City of Melbourne in China

visiting cricket test teams coming to play golf at the Victoria Club

otherwell known identities on that same golf course including the singer Robbie Williams, INXS drummer Paul Hester, two former prime ministers and a Sale of the Century host

Greg has not lived in South Australia before, having been Golfer in Resident at Hidden Valley and doing consultancy work at Newcastle, NSW and elsewhere. He is finding his new role at Copper Club very interesting but also busy, making it difficult to fit in golf lessons. Greg has been pleasantly surprised at the standard of the Club which is a Greg Norman design and a wonderful community asset. Greg’s biggest role is with visiting golfers, and he also fits in weekly tips in the Country Times, video tips which are sent out by email, helping with the growth of junior golfers in the YP area, and on-line help with those who cannot travel.

Greg’s favourite quotable quote:

Involvement with organizing the World Blind Championship at Rosebud, Vic, including lining up a champion golfer from the UK for a media interview. The interviewer’s final question was, “What’s your handicap?” The golfer faced one of the cameras and said, “I can’t see.”

Vote of thanks: Graham Morris
