Applicants are invited to read these instructions with care. Applications not complying with these instructions and guidelines will be withheld from the evaluation process.

The Rotary district 1620, 1630, 2170 have taken the initiative of raising funds to support research projects in the field of brain research through a campaign called «HOPE IN HEAD».
In 2018, 1 grant of 10,000 €and 9grants of 6,000€ will be awarded.
WHO CAN APPLY?Research projects should be focused onneurodegenerative diseases.Both fundamental and clinical research projects are welcomeand should lead to a better understanding of the pathophysiology or to a better treatment ofneurodegenerative diseases.
Applicants should be doctoral students and the grant will be a contribution to the
working money needed for the completion of their doctoral thesis.
Only one application per laboratory can be submitted.
Applications will be granted on the exclusive basis of scientific valueand relevance which will be appreciated by a jury appointed by 3 Belgian districts authorities.
Important conditions
«HOPE IN HEAD» funds can only be used for research purposes, hence excluding institutional overheads, administrative costs and travel costs. An exception is made for costs related to publication in peer reviewed, open access journals.
«HOPE IN HEAD» will only fund public, not profit organizations.
These organizations have to be locatedin the geographic distribution of the ROTARY DISTRICT 1620, 1630, 2170, means Belgium.
«HOPE IN HEAD» will only award grant applications that fulfill the ethical and legal requirements for research using human subjects and/or model animals that protects both the safety of the researchers and the environment. It is the responsibility of the applicant and of his/her thesis promoter to ensure that the research is carried out according to the ethical standards and the regulations that apply in Belgium and at his/her institution.
Results obtained from research funded by «HOPE IN HEAD» will be published in scientific journals according to good scientific practice. The support of «HOPE IN HEAD» and Rotary should be mentioned in the acknowledgements section.
Since a thesis project is usually scheduled for three to four years, based upon a positive evaluation of a brief scientific report by the «HOPE IN HEAD» scientific committee, an additional grant of € 2,500 might be attributed for the third year of the PhD thesis.
The applicants, by submitting the application accept to report to the 3 Belgian Rotarian districts and to present their research during either the assembly or conference of each of the 3 Belgian districts. These report could be used by the district as article in the Rotarian publication, such as Rotary Contact, District newsletters, District website.
