This is the resident’s home, we as staff members are the visitors. We must always remember and respect this at all times.

Training:

You are expected to participate in all training that is necessary for you to do your job to the standards set by us the home and the authorities. Training includes all in-house training such as inductions. External training organised by the college such as NVQ’s) and other professional bodies like St John’s Ambulance (first aid etc…). Day training sessions are also organised through other bodies such as Eastfield Clinic Learning Disabilities Services to improve your knowledge on such areas as epilepsy, autism, challenging behaviour, effective communication etc. and participate in all supervisions and assessments deemed necessary by management.

A training log will be kept of all training you have undergone and all training will be updated as and when needed.

You will become a key worker to one or more service users.

Keyworker responsibilities are as follows:

  • Attend all reviews and appointments as deemed necessary. Giving any appropriate input.
  • Have regular one to one sessions with said service user(s) to build a good relationship with them. Being someone they feel the can talk to, also someone that will listen.
  • You are responsible for keeping service user clothing in good state of repair.
  • You are responsible for thorough cleaning of the private rooms once a week (with service user help if capable and willing).
  • To assist service user to access local and wider community and support them whilst purchasing clothing, presents for family or for themselves etc.
  • To keep the service user care plans up to date reviewing them every six months or sooner if necessary. To keep service user informed of changes.
  • To support service user to maintain contact between friends and family.

Service User needs:

To see to all needs of each service user as an individual. Ensure that they are all adequately met. Care plans and assessment of needs detail each individuals specific needs and level of support required to meet goal.

You are expected to assist and support service users with all aspects of personal care (applying make up, hair, cutting nails etc..) while promoting independence and maintaining dignity at all times. Recording any changes in their physical appearance (lumps, bruises, cuts etc..) in their daily journal and informing a senior member of staff.

To ensure that those service users who are capable and willing, are trained in daily activities including light work duties around the home. Enabling them to be involved in the daily running of the home building confidence and improving life skills.

To enable service users to enjoy and participate in the homes daily activities such as board games, exercises, bingo, reading, writing, arts and crafts, picture/word recognition etc. to ensure that their bodies and their minds are active.

You are expected to escort service users while outside the home on day trips, to and from appointments, shopping trips, holidays etc. you should be professional and responsible at all times. Be polite and courteous as you are representing the home.

There are a number of medications within the home that are administered to specific service users in line with a doctors prescription. You are expected to complete any training regarding the safe handling and administration of medication. This is set out in the legislation that has been specified by the authorities. This training must be completed before you are given the responsibility of administering medication. As part of your responsibility you are expected to have knowledge about each medication, what it is, why it is given, any possible side effects and how to deal with these side effects/problems.

The doctor is the only person who can prescribe medication, you must ensure that you follow the instructions given by the GP of what time it should be given, the amount/strength to be given and you must only give medication to the person it has been prescribed for. Each service user that has been prescribed medication has a corresponding mar sheet. This document must be followed and completed correctly as this is a legal document.

You are expected to read and understand all of the homes policies and procedures regarding medications, this is to ensure that medication is dealt with safely and correctly. After all the specifications are met, you will then be trained by a competent member of staff how to administer the medications, until it is felt that you are able and confident enough to do this yourself without a shadow. As a member of staff you are expected to monitor the condition of the service users and call the GP if you are concerned about any changes in their condition that may be a result of medication or health problems.

Domestic duties and safety issues:

You are expected to read all of the companies policies and procedures, and follow said policies and procedures.

You will be responsible for the preparation and cooking of meals, some residents like to assist but require the right level of support to do so. You need to have food hygiene training to be able to work in the kitchen, you must also follow the strict hygiene code set down in the homes manual. Each service user chooses what they would like to eat, we have a four week menu and there is a minimum choice of three meals for each sitting. Please note that some of the residents are on a certain diet set by the doctors. There is also a choice of drinks available at meal times. Snacks and drinks are available throughout the day.

You are expected to work well as part of a team, to communicate all relative information clearly and concisely to your colleagues. You should also work well using your own initiative.

You must ensure that you work safely and also respect the safety of your fellow work colleagues, service users and other visitors to the home. You must report anything that looks unsafe or that is broken and needs repairing to a senior member of staff. You must also ensure that the item is clearly labeled “unsafe do not use” so to ensure that all are aware and so to prevent accidents leading to damage, harm or even death. If able remove the item/equipment so that it can not be used. You must follow the homes health and safety procedures at all times.
