ROOTS AND WING

THIRD GRADE

LESSON THIRTEEN

(Rev. 6/04)

I.Review

Last week we talked about put-downs. What did we decide about them?

II.Overview

Today we will be talking about compliments. Compliments are a type of warm fuzzy. They are also the type of thing we as PeaceBuilders write about on Praise Notes. Compliments are something you say that is positive about another person. An important part of high self-esteem (feeling good about yourself) is being able to give a receive compliments.

III.Program

A.The story, “Magic Glasses”

  1. Read the story to the class.
  2. What difference do you think it would make if people saw the good in each other?
  3. How many of you know bullies like the ones in this story? Why do you think they act that way (they don’t feel good about themselves).
  4. People who get negative attention don’t think that they could get positive attention or compliments (they have low self esteem). Everyone needs attention. Bullies, trouble-makers, and people who are not kind to others are telling you they need positive attention.
  5. It is all about attitude – we don’t need magic glasses. It is contagious too. Look at what happened in the story – Avalon became known as the world’s most friendly city!

B.Everyone should practice giving compliments. Begin a compliment with the word “I”. Instead of saying something like “You look nice”, say “I like your blouse”. “I” tells the receiver that this is a specific message from me and it belongs to them.

IV.Evaluation

Tell students that they will practice giving compliments. Remind them to start their compliment with “I”. Ask students how should a person respond to a compliment? (Thank you). Ask someone to start.

V.Summary

Thank the class for all the compliments they gave to each other. Giving compliments can be contagious. When a person receives a compliment, they feel good about themselves. When a person feels good about his or herself, he or she starts to build high self-esteem. You will find yourself giving compliments to others too. Just like the people of Avalon, you will find yourself living in a more peaceful and friendly place too.
