General Cleaning of the patient’s bed space or room is to be carried out when the patient vacates the area e.g. is discharged, or is moved to another area of the ward.

Terminal Cleaning is to be carried out once isolation precautions have ceased and following vacation of a room/bed space by a patient with a known or suspected infection, or following an outbreak of infection.

The cleaning of a room/bed space, the furniture and equipment must be undertaken in a methodical manner. A combined detergent/chlorine based disinfectant e.g. Tristel will need to be used for a Terminal Clean; Detergent for a General Clean. Unnecessary equipment and personal belongings should not have been allowed to accumulate in the bed space/room.

1.  / Inform Hotel Services of cleaning requirements as soon as possible in case of need for out of hours/additional cleaning
2.  / Ensure staff wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the task in hand i.e. disposable gloves, aprons, eye protection
3.  / Terminal Clean: Ensure domestic staff remove curtains before cleaning the room, curtain tracks, hand wash basin and en-suite facilities and the appropriate decontamination product e.g. Tristel is used
4.  / Ensure nursing staff remove all bed linen
5.  / Ensure nursing staff decontaminate all reusable patient equipment or dispose of single use/single patient use equipment away from patient area as appropriate
6.  / Ensure any equipment which requires servicing, repair or maintenance, is decontaminated and a Red Status Band attached
7.  / Ensure partially used paper rolls/toilet rolls, any toiletries and part used packs of wipes etc. are discarded
8.  / Ensure toilet brushes are changed when soiled or damaged and following an outbreak, or after use by a patient with a gastrointestinal infection
9.  / Ensure laminated notices are cleaned and restored following terminal cleaning
10.  / Ensure nursing staff decontaminate the mattress according to the manufacturer’s guidelines (some mattresses will not tolerate chlorine releasing agents and may require cleaning via an outside contractor) and undertake a mattress test to ensure it is intact (including water integrity test) using the mattress audit tool
11.  / Ensure terminal clean has been documented in patient’s notes
12.  / Ensure Green Decontamination Status Bands are attached to all patient care equipment following cleaning

Ensure that a copy has been kept in the room and also in the patient’s notes of the patient that has vacated the bed space and the patient that is entering the bed space.
