Room 20 Classroom Policies and Procedures

  1. Tickets:
  2. 2 tickets are awarded each day to students who turn in completed homework on time.
  3. Students who are ‘caught being good’ can be rewarded with tickets.
  4. Tickets are needed to pay for certain things in the classroom.
  5. Get a drink = 2 tickets
  6. Use restroom = 2 tickets
  7. Use pencil sharpener = 3 tickets
  8. New dry erase pen = 8 tickets
  9. New eraser or pencil = 5 tickets
  10. At the end of each grading period (trimester) we will have a silent auction where students will have the opportunity to bid on items for sale. These auctions are very fun so save up those tickets and don’t miss out!
  11. Popsicle Sticks:
  12. Everyone has a Popsicle stick that starts the day in the green basket.
  13. If a student breaks a rule or is not following procedure, he or she will be asked to move their stick to the next basket.
  14. The colors mean:
  15. Green = Good to go!
  16. Blue = Cool off a little and think about your choices.
  17. Yellow = Student will receive a Wall Slip.
  18. Red = Student’s behavior is unacceptable for a 4th grader. Student will receive a Red Day Notice. The Red Day Notice has to be filled out, taken home, signed, and returned the next school day.
  19. You do have the opportunity to move back towards the green basket if you are ‘caught being good.’
  20. At some point during the school year, I will remove the blue basket.
  21. Table Points:
  22. Table points are used in Room 20 to reinforce appropriate behavior. I award table points to table groups who are following instructions and demonstrating appropriate behavior. Please remember this is a group effort!
  23. At the end of the week, the table with the most points is rewarded with tickets and special privileges during the following week. Privileges include things such as being the only table that can use the reading corner, lining up first, etc….
  24. Homework:
  25. Homework is assigned most nights of the week.
  26. Students will be given time first thing every morning for writing homework assignments in their planner. This way there is no excuse for not having your homework written down!
  27. If homework is incomplete ½ credit will be given.
  28. If homework is turned in a day late ½ credit will be given.
  29. Anything more than one day late is no credit.
  30. Work in Progress:
  31. Throughout the week several classwork assignments will be given that are called “Work in Progress.” These assignments are all due on Friday afternoon. Certain times during the week will be set aside for Work in Progress. All students must have a Work in Progress Folder so they have a place to keep their assignments. The Work in Progress Folder DOES NOT EVER go home. It stays at school!
  32. Interactive Journaling:
  33. Each week you will be responsible for writing one journal entry. The topics will be your choice.
  34. Your journal must be turned in by Friday (you can turn it in earlier if you want).
  35. Each week I will read and respond to 6 journals. Feel free to ask questions, tell me about yourself, or write whatever is on your mind. These journals are private! Anything you write will be between the two of us only (unless there is a safety issue)!
  36. Remember, you are responsible for a journal entry every week, even if you know I won’t be responding to yours that week.
  37. Reader’s Workshop:
  38. Reader’s Workshop is a self-selected and self-paced reading program, which is on-going throughout the whole school year.
  39. Students select a book of their choice and fill out Thinking Bookmarks as they read.
  40. Each week students choose one of their Thinking Bookmarks and write about it.
  41. Classroom Library:
  42. Our classroom library is arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.
  43. Students are responsible for putting books back where they belong.
  44. There is also a list of the library books alphabetized by title in case you are looking for a particular book and do not know the author.
  45. You are allowed ONE library book at a time.
  46. My library books do not leave Room 20.
  47. Wise Choices:
  48. If all Work in Progress is complete students may do Wise Choices.
  49. Wise Choices are extra activities for students with extra time. They can include things such as: challenging math pages, word searches, brainteasers, sudoku, and math games, etc….
  50. Fun Friday:
  51. Those who have completed all their Work in Progress by Friday are allowed to participate in the Fun Friday activities.
  52. Those who still have work to finish must continue working and can join the fun once the work is complete.
  53. Work that is not finished by the end of the day on Friday is taken home for weekend homework. It is due first thing Monday morning for full credit.
  54. When I want the class’s attention I will almost always clap a beat. When I do this students must immediately:
  55. Stop what they are doing
  56. Look at me
  57. Listen for instructions
  58. Walking in line to lunch, or prep:
  59. Walk!
  60. Hands to yourself
  61. Facing front
  62. Single file line!
  63. Restroom Policy:
  64. Use the restroom during recess.
  65. If you need to use the restroom during class raise your hand or approach me at an APPROPRIATE time to ask.
  66. Put your tickets in the tub. Put the hand sanitizer pass on your desk. This is how I know you are gone.
  67. When you return, use the hand sanitizer and put it back on the table.
  68. Inbox:
  69. The inbox is located on the table in the back of the room. All finished work goes in the inbox (unless I tell you otherwise). Please do not hand it to me.
  70. When work is finished, get out of your seat and walk quietly to the inbox to turn in your paper. This is done without making unnecessary noise or distracting other classmates.
  71. The inbox has 7 shelves. The number shelf will correspond with the number assignment for that week. For example, if I assign journal first on Monday, then journal is assignment #1 and all journals go on the #1 shelf.
  72. Toys:
  73. Toys are not allowed at school. If I find you with toys or see them in your desk I will confiscate them and you will not getthe toy back until June 1, 2018. Keep in mind that if you play with your school supplies, they have become a toy and I will confiscate them as well.
  74. Cell phones must be turned completely off (not vibrate) during school.
  75. Desk Space: We have very limited desk space in Room 20! Because of this you will need to keep a minimal amount of school supplies with you on a daily basis.
  76. You are allowed ONE pencil box for storage.
  77. At the end of the day, EVERYTHING must fit inside your desk, chair pocket, and back pack. Items are not allowed to be stored on top of your desk.
  78. Do not bring unnecessary items to school.
  79. The area around my desk is also off limits to students.
  80. Please remember, I dismiss you, not the bell!
  81. Time will be given at the end of the day for packing up.
  82. Students are not excused until the floor around them is clean, desks are cleared off and straight.
