Romeo & JulietGroup Video Project

Your Assignment: Instead of writing an essay on Romeo and Juliet, you will work on a group project worth 45 points (culminating). You will choose your own groups, but each group must have 4-6 people. You will take the story of Romeo and Juliet and translate it into another genre or time period. For example, the musical West Side Story transforms the Montagues and the Capulets into rival gangs in 1950s New York City. Your final video should be between 4 and 8 minutes long. This is a rigid requirement. Your video will be stopped after 8 minutes! Since R&J is a 2-hour play, you will have to make decisions about what is most essential to the story--what you must keep in order for your video to be recognizable as R&J.

Materials to Turn in:

  • Full typed and printed script of your video with your group members’ names.
  • A copy of your video on a flash drive, or link to view the video online (ie. YouTube) emailed to Ms. Petersen before you walk into class on the due date.
  • Group feedback sheet (complete for each member in your group)

Steps to Follow:

  1. Choose your group members (CHOOSE WISELY!) Each person must be a valuable contributor to the project (i.e. an actor in a major part (or multiple minor parts), the director/videographer, special effects/music/editing, etc.)
  2. Choose your genre or time period (there is a large list on the back of this sheet)
  3. Establish WHEN and WHERE you will film your video. You may film in school or in other locations, but plan ahead.
  4. Identify the major actions/events that you will want to film – use the attached plot chart to brain-storm
  5. Start writing your script! You can divide the work however you would like, but here are a variety of suggestions:
  6. Each group member is primarily responsible for 1 Act
  7. Everyone works together, Act by Act
  8. Your group is divided into mini-teams of 2-3 people who work on different Acts.

Script: You DO NOT have to stick with the same language. The language must fit with the time period that you choose, or you can keep the language as Shakespeare wrote it. It is up to you! On your script identify which scenes you are paraphrasing at the top of each section.

  1. Get a hold of any props you will need for your film.
  2. Find a camera! You may use your cell phone camera if it is good quality, but remember you must turn your final video in on a flash drive or upload it to YouTube and send me the link so we can watch your video in class.
  3. Film your video!
