Therole of theArea Managerwill be responsibleforthemanagement ofapproximately10 StJohn Ambulance units(ofalltypes)within theirallocated area. Thisisachallenging role sothesuccessful candidate(s)will be a proactive managerwith thenecessaryskills, knowledge and experienceto manage changewell,build and lead high performing teams, develop excellentunit managersand continuallyfocusonthedeliveryofconsistentlyhigh qualityresults.
Main dutiesandresponsibilities
1. Tomanagetheday-to-dayactivities ofvolunteersand all unitsatalocal level
a. Provide line management to all unit managerswithin the areaensuringthat thereisa high standardofleadership present in all units
b. Topromote andmanageeffectivecommunicationand ensure goodlocal working
relationships
c. Ensurethat all volunteer HR policies and procedures are beingfollowed byunit managersatall times
d. Workwith unitmanagerstodevelopand implementvolunteer recruitmentand retention plans
e. ConductVolunteerDevelopment Reviews (VDR) with all unit managerswithin thearea
f.Ensure local unitsarefunctioning effectivelyand meeting agreedstandards.
2. Toencourageandsupportoperational eventactivities within the area
a. Ensure adult operationalunitsprovideadequateeventcoverand liaisingwiththe regional events team
b. Support theplanning and co-ordination ofevents ata local level.
3. Toencourageandsupport youth activities within the area
a. Ensure local unitsdelivernational programmesina safeand effective manner, maximising the development ofyoung people
b. Activelypromoteyouth eventsand provide assistance tothe youthteam as required.
4. Toencourageandsupport training activities withinthearea
a. Tosupport the planningand deliveryoftraining programmeswithin the areabased ona needsbasedapproach
b. Provide supportstothetraining teamin ensuringunitsareproviding an effective and
efficient training programmeto volunteers.
5. Toensurethatunitscomplywithnational policies and procedures,enabling them to deliver services that arecompliantwith external regulation (suchasCQC) and areofa suitablyhigh quality.
6. Otherduties andresponsibilities maybe delegated via agreementwith the District Manager.

There is arequirement thatAreaManagersform part oftheSilveron-call rotasystem fortheDistrict;
providing management support to volunteerswhen required.

Recruitmentmethod
Tobecomea St John Ambulance volunteeryouwill be askedtocomplete anapplication/joiningform and provide references. Depending on thenatureofyourrole, you mayberequiredtoundergoa Criminal Record Bureaucheck. You willcompletean introductionpackageandreceivetraining relevant to your role.Youwill onlybe ableto begin yourvolunteering oncewe have completedthenecessary checksrelevantto yourrole(which for someroleswill include employment history).
Criminal Record Bureau (CRB)checks
Confirmation ofyourappointment will be subject to thereceiptofasatisfactory CRB checkif, duringthe course ofyour role,you arelikelytocarryout taskswith,or in supervisionof,childrenorvulnerable adults.
Probationaryperiod
Final confirmation ofyourappointment tothis roleissubjecttoamaximumsix-monthprobationary period,or12monthsin the case ofvolunteer youthrelatedpositions. Ongoing training
All ourvolunteersare providedwith the necessarytraining toenable them tocarryout their role.To continue tooperate in this role youmustmaintainthe competencies required and anappropriatelevel offitnesswhere roles are physicallydemanding.Medical decision makersareresponsibleformaking decisionsonfitnessfor role based onpreviousperformanceandthemedicalform you will completeas part oftherecruitment process.
