Role Title: Volunteer Play influencer for young people with disabilities
Reports to: Club/Linking Supervisor and as appropriate Play leader
Why does Lifelong Family Links exist?
Lifelong Family links was established in 1982 by a group of parents and professional to offer respite care for families of young people with disabilities. This range from autism to physical disability. We provide a variety of fun, interactive and engaging services to the young people such as:
- After School club, which includes activities such as:
- Martial art
- Arts and Crafts
- Healthy Eating
- Sports activities
- Cycling
- Study skills
- Weekend activities on Saturday and Sunday
- Holiday Playscheme
- A befriending scheme to help the young people age 15-18 get out and be part of the outside world. Our catchment area is Southwark
- Lifeskills and employability training
Transport for the young people is provided to support the parents further.
We seek to help in other ways too. We tailor assistance to a family’s specific needs to include personal care and link that ultimately encourages independence and interest.
Who do we offer our service to?
We provide activities for children and young people with disabilities, from the ages of 5-25. Our catchment area for using this service is the borough of Lambeth and Southwark and children and families living within this area have sole access to our services.
Where does these activities take place?
Our young people centre is located in the heart of a residential area in Lambeth, close to Brixton, Tulse Hill and Streatham. In 2013 we changed our name from Lambeth Family Links to Lifelong Family Links, partly to reflect the localities of our families who visit us from different part of South London. There are good transport links the nearest bus stop being Palace Road and Streatham Bus Garage. Our address is Laburnum Hall, 1 Barstow Crescent, Palace road, London, SW2 3NS.
What difference will you make?
As a volunteer play worker you will support us to deliver quality activities for the young people. Always ensuring that high quality activities and safety is paramount. Interactions with the young person are of paramount importance to enable them to Access, Sustain and Enjoy their chosen activity.
Key Tasks/Activities
- Support the LFL team to provide fun and interactive club activities in support for the young people
- Use a range of childcare, play or support skills as part of an activities programme. (Training will be provided)
- Help and Supervise children and young people on outings and other external and internal activities.
- Ensure all play and other equipment is clean and safe.
- Volunteers are sometimes required to provide 1-1 to a child or young person
These key activities are not exhaustive and is very much dependent on the level of disability of the young person.

What will you gain as a volunteer?
- A good understanding and experience of working with young people with disabilities.
- A great reference on completion of 6 months successful volunteering
- Excellent childcare experience and working knowledge of a career as a play worker/Support Worker
Other information
- There are weekly sessions to pick from which are:
- After School Club – Tuesday – Thursday – 4pm – 6pm
- Lifeskills and employability – Tuesday and Wednesday – 11:30 – 3:30pm
- Weekend Clubs – Saturday – 11am – 2pm,
- Holiday playscheme – Half-term/holiday – Monday–Thursday – 10am – 3pm
- Ideally we would like a volunteer that can support one or more session per week.
- Minimum commitment of 3 months (No training), 6 Months (Training provided).
- DBS and References will be required
- Expenses for transport and lunch will be reimbursed.
