Role title: Medical Officer

Reports to:Unit Manager, CADS

Directorate:Mental Health, Addictions, and Intellectual Disability

Direct reports: Nil

Location:The position will be based at CADS at Wakari Hospital, but from time to time it may require working off base. CADS provides its services through a number of outreach clinics both within Dunedin and in rural centres. The Appointee must be willing to provide these services from a number of community locations and settings as required.

Purpose of the Role
To work as a member of the CADS multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective medical treatments for clients experiencing moderate to severe substance use problems.

Formal Qualifications
  • Applicants must hold medical qualifications recognised in New Zealand according to the Medical Practitioners Act 1968.
  • The appointee will have work experience in the field of substance use disorders, and be willing to adopt a full harm-reduction approach to treatment.
  • The appointee will hold a current driver’s licence.

Key Accountabilities / Deliverables / Example Measures
Clients of CADS /
  • To provide medical assessments, including diagnoses of substance use disorders and problem formulations

  • Clinical documentation as indicated and in accordance with the relevant standards

  • To provide or support proven therapeutic interventions for the treatment of substance-use disorders, including the full range of harm reduction options

  • Successful interventions which lead to client improvement

  • To provide regular clinical reviews and ongoing prescribing for clients receiving opioid substitution treatment
/
  • Effective co-ordination of services and continuity of methadone maintenance treatment

  • To provide education, advice, diagnostic and referral interventions for disease conditions and health issues associated with substance use disorders (e.g. liver disease, HIV/AIDS, etc.)

  • Successful interventions which lead to client improvement

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-standard clinical records of all clients seen and to ensure all documents are uploaded to Health Connect South

  • Appropriate documentation of assessment, treatment, and discharge plans and reviews
