About the project

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. British Council Pakistan manages a range of activities that sit within four strategic business units (SBUs): English, Arts, Education, and Society. The Research, Evaluation and Monitoring Unit (REMU) was created two years ago to elevate the British Council as a thought leader, and to add depth, evidence, and thus credibility to our SBU programmes. REMU has published many successful research reports including; ‘Pakistan’s Creative Industries’, and ‘Mainstreaming Disability in Pakistan’.

REMU launched a project last year titled ‘The Current Status of the English Language in Pakistan’. The project was interested in three main stakeholders; learners of English, teachers of English and professionals who use English. The main objective was to make a realistic assessment of English language use in Pakistan, and to report on any trends in Pakistani society. The research focused on six areas;

  1. Education
  2. Socio-economic factors and economic value
  3. Mass media / social media
  4. Literature
  5. Historical legacy
  6. Pakistani variant

A literature review was complete, a survey was circulated across the country, and a large dataset was collected. The analysis was undertaken by a partner organisation which resulted in 68 page report.
