Cluster – Biomedical Cluster

Accountable to – Co Director AHSP

Aim - The AHSP will create an environment which stimulates innovation to drive health and social care improvement and wealth. The environment will drive synergy integration in R/D, innovation, informatics, service improvement and education. The partnership will focus on a number of strategic clusters including Biomedical, Design, Quality and Informatics and with each cluster having dedicated leadership from a Director.

Remit of AHSP Cluster Director

The remit of a Cluster Director will be to:

(i)work in collaboration with AHSP Innovation Champions and key stakeholders to nurture, develop and prioritise the cluster’s activities with an emphasis on identifying project based activities aligned to AHSP’s strategy, outcomes and defining principles;

(ii)produce an annual operational plan for the ongoing development of the cluster and support the development of the overall AHSP annual plan;

(iii)demonstrate to internal and external stakeholders how the innovation led work of AHSP will positively affect them, their teams and their organisations;

(iv)lead on translating innovation led opportunities into funded projects which offer the potential to achieve meaningful and tangible impact;

(v)manage the ongoing performance of projects reporting and celebrating successes and undertaking remedial action;

(vi)engage in activities to promote AHSP, including the production of reports and communications;

(vii)maintain an ongoing dialogue with the other AHSP Leads and co-directors on the cluster’s performance and its alignment with the wider AHSP strategic and operational domain;

(viii) Supported by the AHSP Office be fully familiar with the AHSP strategic and operating environment.

Specific remit

(i)Provide leadership to further grow to its full potential the skills and medical technologies components of the biomedical cluster which has emerged from the Tay Cities deal bid.

(ii)Build a strong integrated management of the cluster that is embedded in the NHS , Industry and the University – this cluster incorporates its strengths in medical technologies and skills but ensuring close alignment and synergy with the development of the biopharma/biotech sector and other areas where appropriate

(iii)Ensure that the operational plan reflects the objectives of the AHSP strategy

(iv)Ensure that all the collective targets in the operational plan are achieved with emphasis on sustainability and on developing a centre of excellence

(v)Influence stakeholders both externally and internally so that Tayside is recognised as the centre for Biomedical excellence in education/skills , medical technologies innovation and research development

(vi)Develop a strong collaboration with industry and a commercial focus so that economic growth can be demonstrated throughout the cluster and within the region and nationally

(vii)Develop a range of indicators that measure progress against the agreed objectives

(viii)Ensure all the leadership and teams within the cluster are focused on key deliverables identified within their own remit as well those agreed for the cluster

(ix)Ensure that all activity can demonstrateimpact in making a difference to health and wellbeing and wealth

Role specification

The Cluster Director will be a senior and experienced individual who will have had opportunity to work in

partnership with the NHS, Social Care, the University and industry.The candidate will also have a good understanding of collaboration with industry with emphasis on the Biomedical areas of education/skills, medical technologies and R&D. The Director will be able to demonstrate significant academic leadership knowledge and skills and be able to apply them to influence a range of partner to collaborate to make transformational change in health and social care. The Director will also be able to demonstrate a good understanding and plans for the financial sustainability of the cluster. It is expected that the Cluster Director will require circa 2 days per week. The director will be expected to form and lead a broad biomedical cluster leadership team and, for this post, will part of the AHSP executive, and be accountable to the AHSP co-directors. The cluster director will be supported by the AHSP Associate Director, AHSP Business Projects Lead and Secretary.
