Location

Overall purposeTo enableoutreach to the local community, and provide pastoral care for those on the periphery of the church working alongside circuit staff and local pastoral visitors. The church has links with two local schools. It runs regular and well attended social events, and a pre-school meets on the premises. There is also a strong link with Aspire which provides services for those affected by alcohol and drugs. It is hoped to use these links as a starting point for building further community engagement.

ReviewWork to be reviewed every 6 months through a peer review scheme

TrainingTo undertake the District Local Church Pastor training course and commit to further training as set out

Supervision and SupportTo be agreed within the circuit, but it is expected that the post holder will have regular meetings with the local ministry team, which includes the minister with pastoral oversight, local pastoral assistants and any other local church pastors in the group.

ExpensesExpenses to be agreed with the local church/circuit as appropriate.

AccountabilityThis role will be accountable to the Presbyter with pastoral oversight of the church

Workforce (for DBS)To be agreed with local Safeguarding Officer

Key Responsibilities

The following duties will be undertaken as part of the role outlined above. All roles within the District carry with them the responsibility to take the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults seriously and any concerns that arise within them should be reported as per Local District Safeguarding Policy.

Pastoral

  • Visiting and pastoral care for those on the periphery of the church community, church members and regular attenders
  • To conduct funerals for community members and work with the minister for funerals for church members. To exercise extended communion in care homes and for individuals

  • To work collaboratively with the pastoral committee and others to ensure all data relating to membership and community roll is kept up to date and that appropriate visiting records are kept

Community

  • To be a recognize point of contact for the local church
  • To make and develop community links
  • To identify further opportunities for outreach in the area and raise this at Church Council meetings.

Training

  • To undertake further mandatory training as identified by the District Scrutiny Panel.

Skills and Attributes

Education / Level 2 NQF (typically GCSE, O Level or NVQ Level 2) to include English as pass level or to be able to demonstrate relevant experience
Knowledge and Skills / Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals and groups using various methods

A member of the Methodist Church or regular attendee
Personal Qualities / Empathetic, sensitive and supportive both in personal and team situations
