Leadership Application Requirements

Welcome and thank you for showing interest in being a part of the Manchester High School Marching Band Leadership Team. I hope you will find the application process to be interesting and enriching regardless of the outcome. This application represents a significant departure from the standard way of selecting student leaders. If you have any questions about the process or your application, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Bagwell at any time. Good luck, and work hard to best represent yourself through this process.

Your candidacy will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. Past performance
  2. Quality of your application
  3. Future leadership potential
  4. Best fit for the individual and organization

When completing the application, be thorough, complete, creative and honest. Do not say what you think I want to hear. Say what you really think. Leaders are people who can offer something new and different to the organization. This application process is structured so that you will gain insight into yourself as a person, so please be honest and thorough. You need to open up and show the person what you truly are, or what you aspire to be. Whether you are chosen to participate in the office you apply for is not the penultimate point. Dig deep inside and answer the questions and complete the service project with the intent of learning something new.

Leadership Application

Name: ______

Position(s) Applying for: ______

______

Email Address: ______

Current G.P.A. ______

On a separate piece of paper, please type your answers for the following questions:

  1. What are your greatest personal strengths? How will you use them in the position for which you are applying? Please enclose a current resume.
  1. Interview someone from the High School (student, faculty, coach, administrator) and ask him or her for his or her views on leadership. What did you learn from your conversation? How is it different from yours? (You may not interview Mr. Elder).
  1. Creating and maintaining an activity is a constant challenge. As a leader, you are responsible for having a direct impact on the quality of the organization. On the attached document, please list the names and phone numbers of people whom you have spoken with that might be interested in joining the band. The work you put in will show a great deal about your commitment to the entire organization. Sometimes all it takes is someone asking….
  1. Complete a service project for the Band program. The scope and duration of the project are at your discretion. You may choose something that you think needs to be done, or you may ask Mrs. Bagwell/Mr. Harper for a project suggestion. If you have any questions about the validity of your chosen project, see Mrs. Bagwell prior to starting it.
  1. Open forum: this is where you have the opportunity to show your creative side. You may do anything that you deem appropriate (school appropriate) to convince us that you are able to “think outside the box” and address issues in a different manner. This is the portion of the application where you should expect to learn the most about yourself as an individual. Therefore take a risk here. Once again, this should be fun for you and the band. This is your speech that will take place on May 15th during class.

Please understand that if chosen, you will be held to a higher standard of behavior, performance and work ethic than your peers. You must be willing to make that sacrifice so that others around you may succeed. Serving in this capacity will not only provide others with a better experience, but it will provide you with a tremendous growth opportunity that will service you for years to come. You also understand that if you neglect your duties, or do not in any way fulfill your obligations, Mrs. Bagwell reserves the right to remove you from your leadership position at any time.
