The context of this job

Octavia Housing provides affordable homes in the heart of London. We develop, manage and maintain properties and provide a range of specialist support services to meet the diverse needs of our tenants. Our aim is to provide a service which is professional, personal, effective and caring.

Our support services include care and support for elderly and vulnerable tenants. We aim to enable people to live independently and in comfort for as long as possible. Our schemes offer on-site care for older people and those with dementia and mental health problems.

The purpose of this post

To provide good quality care to the residents, in accordance with departmental procedures, guidelines and professional standards, ensuring that individual members maintain their maximum potential and independence.

Key tasks

  1. To act as keyworker to tenants as required, liaising with family and other agencies.
  1. To assist tenants who need help with dressing/undressing, bathing and toileting
  1. To assist Tenants in preparation of light meals
  1. To assist the Senior Care Assistant in all aspects of care planning & reviews with the tenants.
  1. To assist in the monitoring and evaluation of all aspects of care offered and to respond to the needs of tenants.
  1. To assist tenants to fulfil personal care as required, including bathing, podiatry, and toileting where necessary.
  1. To answer emergency alarm calls and greet visitors to the scheme.
  1. To record all such assistance given in the case notes and to notifying the Senior Care Assistant or manager immediately of any concerns about tenants.
  1. To escort tenants to appointments.
  1. To actively take part in the delivery of activity sessions.
  1. To assist in the promotion of all aspects of care.
  1. To ensure care plans are regularly updated and that any concerns about tenants are raised promptly and professionally.
  1. To communicate to the Manager all accidents and incidents that affect either a service user or impact on the service and to take appropriate action in accordance with policies and procedures.
  1. To undertake additional duties as required by the Senior Care Assistants.

How will the post holder know if they are performing?

A number of performance targets will be planned and agreed each year with the line manager and these will be monitored at regular meetings. Regular feedback will be provided by the line manager and opportunity provided to discuss any problems, personal and team matters and personal development issues.

The post holder will be expected to comply with the Association’s and the department’s policies and procedures at all times. These include, but are not limited to equal opportunities, confidentiality, data protection and health and safety.

Tenant/client involvement is an essential part of all roles within the association and all are expected to support the policies and procedures relating to the involvement of tenants/clients and to contribute to the association’s action plan.

In order to do their job the post holder will be trained and coached in the procedures and policies of the Association. They will be expected to familiarise themselves with the association’s procedures and policies and to seek advice and guidance from the line manager if required.

Essential Criteria
1 / Experience:
  • Experience of caring for elderly or disabled people, (including voluntary work)
  • Experience of working in a ‘care’ setting for at least 1 year

Minimum of NVQ2 in Health and Social care or equivalent or be near to completion of NVQ2 in Health and Social care or equivalent / E
