About Biology I

Biology is an exciting, hands-on course that surveys the study of life. We will investigate the answers to many biological questions and will discover that we have even more unanswered questions! Biology is an EOC class and passing this course is required for graduation. Together, we will work to ensure that you are proficient in Biology and prepared to take this exam in June.

Classroom Expectations

Rules

It is my expectation that all the established school-wide rules be followed in my classroom. In addition, you will be required to adhere to the following:

1)  Do not consume food, drinks, or candy during class. (Mints and gum are the only exception without a doctor’s note).

2)  Do not have electronic devices out, do not attempt to use them, nor have them turned on (unless I have specifically told you to do so for a class activity).

3)  Do not attempt to sleep during class.

4)  Throw your trash directly in the small containers at your lab station or the bigger trash can at the front of the class. Do not throw it in the sink or near the trash can.

5)  Turn homework in on time at the beginning of class, unless I specifically tell otherwise. This will be written on the board to avoid confusion.

6)  If you don’t understand a lesson, tell me before you leave class!

Consequences for disobeying rule number:

1 -

1st Offense: 5 minute lunch detention and Student Teacher Conference 2nd Offense: Full lunch detention and Phone Conference with Parent/Guardian 3rd Offense: Referral for ASD and Phone Conference with Parent/Guardian 4th Offense: Referral for Saturday School and Parent/Guardian – Student – Teacher Conference

2- I will ask for your device, if you refuse, you will get a referral.

3- You will be asked to stand for 5 minutes to get yourself focused. This will increase by 5 minutes if necessary.

4 – You and your teammates will have points deducted from that day’s assignment.

Our class’s BIG GOAL:

·  ALL students will achieve at least an 85% mastery of each objective as measured by quizzes, unit assessments, and exams. Retests will be available on Castle Learning. Extra Credit for each unit will be given on Castle Learning and via webquests.

·  ALL students will score a 3, 4 or 5 on the Biology EOC.

·  You will learn to think, act, and work on a college level and will become more inquisitive and globally aware citizens.

Attendance Policy

The absent work folders will include copies of all of the materials worked on each day. It is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed and ask questions if you need clarification. If work was assigned BEFORE you were absent, it is due the day you return. If work was assigned DURING your absence, you have 2 days for an unexcused absence and 5 days for an excused absence to turn in the make-up work. Labs may be made up in class or on a virtual website, depending on time and the availability of materials. If you miss a test or quiz, you have 5 days to make it up. If you fail to take the test within 5 days it will be a permanent zero.

You will need to attend recovery in order to pass. It is YOUR responsibility to keep track of your attendance and seek recovery before the end of the semester.

Required Supplies

Each day, all students are required to have:

·  3-ring binder (for SCIENCE class ONLY!)

·  Loose leaf paper

·  Dividers

·  Pens and pencils

Other supplies will be provided in class, but you can also bring your own. The supplies we will use are:

Glue/Glue Sticks, Colored pencils/Markers/Crayons, Scissors, Rulers, Construction Paper, and Hole Punchers.

Classroom Procedures (Abbreviated)

Tardiness: You are expected to be in your seat working on the warm up when the tardy bell rings. If you are still in the hall, you will report to lockout. If you are out of your seat or not working on your warm up, you will not receive credit and will lose points.

Getting Your Attention: There is no talking when I (or a classmate) am speaking. If I need your attention, I will let you know and raise my hand. You will immediately quiet down and raise your hand as well. Once everyone is quiet, it will remain that way until I say otherwise.

Work Time: When working independently, there will be no talking. When working in groups, you may talk quietly about the tasks, not personal conversations. You will remain in your seats during work time unless your reason falls into a specific category (see Leaving Your Seat). If I elect to play music during work time, voices will not carry over the music or we will lost that privilege.

Late Work: Late work will be graded with 50 pts deducted. Qualifiers (Unit Test Reviews) will be given 3 to 5 days before the due date. They will need to be turned in as soon as the bell rings to start class. They count as quiz grades, and qualify you to take the test. If you do not have the Unit Qualifiers completed when they are due, you will be required to complete it with points deducted as the minutes pass. If you do not complete it before you leave on the due date, you will get a ZERO for the Qualifier AND for the Unit Test.

Leaving the classroom: You should remain in your seat at all times. If you need to leave the classroom, I will call for an escort. No students are allowed in the hallway during the first and last 15 minutes of class or without an escort.

Leaving your seat: I expect you to be in your seat at all times. You may leave your seat for following reasons: 1) Getting tissues; 2) Sharpening your pencil; 3) Getting hand sanitizer. You may NOT get up during notes, when I am speaking, or when you are working independently. If you need to get up during that time or for any other reason, you must raise your hand and request permission.

Dismissal: In order for the class to leave on time, the classroom must be clean and all materials must be put away. All students will be at their lab stations, NOT AT THE DOOR. The bell does not dismiss you, I do.

Grading Grading Scale

Your grade will be based on the following: A= 90 - 100

B= 80 - 89

Tests: 60% C= 70 - 79

Classwork/Homework: 20% D= 60 - 69

Quiz/Labs/Foldables: 20% x 2 F= 0 - 59

*In addition, the EOC is worth 25%*

If you need a printed progress report, you may request one and I will have it within 48 hours. Extra credit is available, if eligible.
