Power Equipment
- Do not operate any machine until you have received proper instruction, fully understand how to operate it, and have received theinstructor’s permission to use it.
- Wear proper eye protection devices when in potential hazard areas.
- Have your instructor check your work setup.
- Check and make all adjustments before turning on the power.
- Make sure other persons are clear before turning on the power.
- Guards must be in place and function properly.
- Start and stop your own machine and remain with it until it has come to a complete stop.
- Only one person should operate a machine unless the operation requires a helper.
- Do not leave a running machine unattended.
- Disconnect electrical power before oiling and cleaning.
- Allow a safe distance between your hands and blades, cutters, or moving parts. Keep fingers in such a position that there is no danger of their slipping into the cutter or moving parts.
- Keep machines clear of tools and other items.
- Keep the floor around machines clear of liquids, scraps, tools and material.
- Give the machine your undivided attention while you are using it. Do not look away to talk to others.
- Never lean or lounge on any machine.
- Do not use extension cords for permanent connections.
- Notify your instructor of any breakage or malfunction.
- Allow all machines to come to a complete stop before removing work or making a new setup.
General Lab Safety rules
- Keep work areas neat and organized, and clean up all work areas each day.
- No playing or running, and no throwing of objects of any kind. Be alert and attentive at all times.
- Don’t wear loose or baggy clothing or jewelry when using tools. Tie back dangling, long hair when using tools.
- Wear eye protection, and gloves when necessary.
- Let the instructor know if you have any physical problem that might interfere with the normal method of working.
- Report all accidents, injuries or breakage to the instructor immediately.
- There are special safety rules for each tool, especially power tools. If you are unsure, don’t use the tool. See the instructor and review the relevant safety rules.
- The classroom is a science lab. All safety rules in the TCCHS Lab Safety Policy must be followed.
