Rob Thomas Memorial Scholarship

Introduction: Rob Thomas, a former Roy High School Basketball star (1979-1982) and two year All-State performer, was struck down at age 22 on May 24, 1986—some five days before he was able to leave for an LDS Mission to Albuquerque, New Mexico. His untimely death shocked the entire community and jolted us into the reality of just how short life can sometimes be.

But Rob touched many lives in his 22 years, many at RoyHigh School, and we are extremely proud of his accomplishments and the fine ambassador he has been for the Royals. He was a 6’8” center who prided himself on a physical brand of basketball and starred on a Roy High team that placed second in 4-A basketball tournament—the school’s best showing ever—during his junior year and fourth during his senior season. That year, the Royals posted their best record ever, 20-4. In all, over that two year period, Roy won 38 games while losing only 12. “He’s the only kid who started every game in his sophomore through senior years at RoyHigh School,” Coach Ted Smith said. “He’s far and away the leading rebounder in the school’s history and is second in career scoring.”

Then, after playing for two years and earning All-Conference honors at Snow College, Rob moved on to Weber State where he played for two years and was captain of the team as a senior.

The immediate family of Rob Thomas wished to continue supporting the youth of RoyHigh School in the spirit of their son, brother, and uncle. For this reason, we have initiated this scholarship program to provide financial aid for one Roy High School senior per year who has aspirations of continuing his/her education.

The awarding of this scholarship will be based upon the criteria the family has selected which they feel represent the attributes and characteristics of Rob Thomas. These include: honesty, personal pride, leadership, by example as well as by position, citizenship in the community and school, a desire for education, a well-balanced lifestyle, and a willingness to work hard.
