Roads Around the World

We have been looking at how children in other countries travel to school.

In China many children ride their bikes to school. A lot of people ride bikes, it’s one of the most common forms of transport. There are almost 250 times more bikes than cars in China. Children usually go to school six days a week and get Sunday off.

If you lived on a sheep station in the middle of Australia you probably wouldn’t actually go to school. You would listen to your teacher on a radio and then send the answers back to her. This is called “school of the air”. Your tests and homework would be sent through by post or email. You would probably ride lots of horses.

In Venice, they go to school by boat. It is made up of 120 islands and has canals instead of streets. The children go to school six days a week from 8.30am until 1.30pm.

There are many ways for children to get to school in India. They have bullock carts, tongae (horse drawn carts), motor bikes, three-wheeled pedal and even motorized rickshaws. People also ride camels. Only a third of children go to school in India, many are taught at home by their mother.

In New York you might travel to school on the subway, which is like the London Underground. Many children in America go to school on a yellow bus.

Maybe we should find out about travelling to school in other countries.
