Leadership and Management Paper Guidelines and Grading Rubric

The Leadership and Management Paper is an 8 - 10 page (including title page and reference list) typed or keyboarded paper, which must be double spaced and in APA format. The student will write about a concept or issue related to leadership and management. Students must get approval of the topic from the instructor prior to beginning the paper. Students who have concerns or problems related to writing should contact the EIU Writing Center at 581-5929.

Steps to Writing Your Paper

  1. Decide on the concept or issue that is of interest to you.
  2. Get approval for the topic from your instructor in advance of beginning the paper.
  3. Search the literature at the library to help you understand how others have addressed this topic and what research has been done.
  4. Develop an outline of your paper. This helps to keep you organized and on "track".
  5. Title - Keep it simple and indicative of what the paper is about.
  6. Introduction - The introduction is where you justify the significance of the topic and clearly state the purpose of your paper. This will be no longer than 1-2 paragraphs. Be sure to include a thesis statement.
  7. Review of the Literature. This will contain the main content of your paper. This is where you will describe your topic, what others have said about it, what research has been done, and how it applies to you professionally. Be sure that you use a variety of original references for your paper, inlduing books, journal articles, research articles, interviews, and websites.
  8. Conclusion - Summarize what you have said and describe how you will apply the
  9. leadership and management concept or issue in your future work place.
  10. Reference Page - Follow APA guidelines. You should have at least 8 references. Make sure that all references in the reference list are cited in the paper.
  11. Headings- Use headings to identify key elements of your paper. Since the paper will only be 8-10 pages in length, you will need only two levels of headings. See your APA manual for appropriate format.
  12. Spelling, Grammar, Font, and Length - I will expect the paper to be constructed using proper grammar, correct spelling, a font of 12 (nothing else accepted), no more than 8-10 pages (including the Title and Reference pages), and use 1" margins. Points will be subtracted from total grade if more than10 pages in length.

Format shall include the following:

  1. Title page
  2. Introduction with a thesis statement
  3. Body of the paper (Review of the key literature related to the concept or issue)
  4. Summary and conclusion
  5. Reference list
