Rita Bubak Memorial Merit Award

About this award:

This merit award has been established by the families of the Monroe, Snohomish and SultanPublic Schools, SkykomishValley Indian Education Program. This award honors the memory of Rita Bubak, Blackfeet. Rita worked tirelessly in her West Seattle community and beyond. She taught in the Culture House at PathfindersSchool, and with her brother Harold Thomas, and daughter, Donna Torres, brought cultural arts to many in the greater Seattle area. We are grateful that she and her family taught cultural arts to our children.

Rita raised two families, helped to feed the hungry, and was active in the Sister Kateri Circle. At her memorial, as we gathered to talk about her life, those in attendance described how they knew her, and we saw again and again how remarkable it was that one person had been involved in so many educational and community service activities and had accomplished so much.

This merit award is for a Native American/Alaska Native (enrolled or descendant) who resides in Washington and is currently enrolled in a post-high school educational program (4-year, 2-year or tribal college, or technical program). The award is designated to be used for any expenses associated with the recipient’seducational endeavors, including books, supplies, or transportation costs.

The amount of the award is $350.00 and will be presented to the chosen applicant at the
