Risk Assessments of CentreBuildings and Grounds

It is imperative that group members are closely supervised by group leaders bothinside the buildings and in the Centre grounds.The following risk assessments 1- 8 listthe hazards and control measures. These have been identified to raise your awareness of these issues and assist with the safe use of the site. A full induction is completed for all courses run by the Centre staff. Self led groups must ensure that a FULL BRIEFING occurs and control measures are in place on arrival at the Centre.

Hot water taps and showers- Scalds / Participants /Staff/ Other visitors / High / All taps, with exception of the kitchen sinks, are fitted with mixing valves to reduce temperature to an acceptable level. / Low / It is recommended that staff visit the Centre prior to attending with groups.

Professional Catering company can be used to limit kitchen use by visiting groups.
No outdoor clothing or equipment are allowed in the kitchen at any time.
Persons entering the Kitchen must wash hands with soap and warm water prior to touching surfaces/ plates/ food etc.
First aid kits are found in all kitchens. Please record any incidents or accidents in the Accident book.

Recognised protocols for food hygiene must be followed during the storage, preparation and consumption of food stuffs on site.
After use all pots/ pans/ plates /cutlery etc, must be washed with hot water and detergent before being dried and put away. Argoed Lwyd has an automatic dish washer- please follow the operating procedure found on the top of the dishwasher.
After use all cooking equipment, work surfaces and floors must be washed down with hot water and dilute bleach.

Gastroenteric illness e.g. Norovirus outbreak at the Centre
(Also refer to the Risk Assessment for the Kitchen) / Participants /Staff/ Other visitors / High / Group Leaders must make a determined effort to ensure all participants are free from illness prior to attending the Centre.
Group leaders are responsible for informing the Centre Director of any member of the visiting group who has been involved in a known outbreaks within the five days leading up to the visit to the Centre.
If a person has been involved in an outbreak they may attend the Centre when they have been free of symptoms for at least a 48hr period prior to attending. The Centre Director must be informed of this prior to group attending the Centre.
Throughout all courses the importance of good personal hygiene among the group must be a key part of the initial briefing on arrival this will include:
  • The availability of Soap throughout the Centre at all sinks. All participants are responsible for washing hands with soap and warm water after going to the toilet/ on return from outdoor activities/ before eating etc.
/ Low / As normal practice the Centre Director ensures that the Centre is professionally cleaned before any group attends.
For self led groups: Group Leaders are to advise your group in your initial briefing on arrival at the Centre of the Hazards and Controls.
The initial briefing on arrival must include the importance of good hygiene among the group such as washing hands with soap and warm water after going to the toilet/ before eating etc and showering after activities.
No outdoor clothing or equipment are allowed in the Centre and in particular not in the kitchen at any time.
Any soiled items must be removed from the Centre immediately and place outside in a sealed plastic bag
If a there is a Gastroenteric illness (e.g norovirus) outbreak at the Centre:
  • The Group will be required to leave and the Course cancelled.
  • Centre Director will organise and implement a complete Decontamination of the Centre. This will include cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation of the Centre in line with Public Health guidance.
  • Group Leaders please note the cost for Centre decontamination can exceed £1000. This cost will be passed on where circumstances dictated.
This cost does not include the costs of cancellation and loss of income incurred through the loss of other courses as a result of infection.

A set of Clear House rules are to be set out during the introduction briefing on arrival.

Be aware that the road up to the Centre is regularly used by farm vehicle, walkers, dogs, sheep. In addition children play on the road in the village on a regular basis.
