What’s the business all about?

The business is X-CelSuperturn. They make components for the oil and gas industry and have three sites; Atlas in Sheffield, at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham and Batley. They also have a site in Houston. Their products range from heavy engineering through to smaller components, all engineered to extremely high quality and fine tolerances, using state of the art technology and exotic materials. What would you be doing?

You will be expected to undertake an intensive induction, then experience and add value to two specific areas of the business in your initial 6 months with them. You will be learning about and contributing to a variety of different areas of work, so there is no typical day or week. Activities during your six months might include:

  • 6 weeks induction with 1-2 weeks in each of the key areas; warehouse, quality inspection, turning, milling, deep hole boring and the office
  • Completing a report and presenting proposals to the Ops Director and Management Director about areas for process or product improvement
  • Undertaking two, two-month placementsin technical/shop floor areas to implement your ideas
  • Translating customer designs into reality by interpreting their specifications
  • Manufacturing using boring machines or lathes
  • Using computer programmes to machine/mill components
  • Working closely with quality
  • Inspection and testing including inspections, checking batches and tolerances
  • Working at any of the three Yorkshire sites - Batley, AMP and Attercliffe
  • Production scheduling

This internship is designed to give you a broad introduction to the organisation, their products, processes and people. This is a rare opportunity to gain broad experience, find your niche and secure a permanent positionin an exciting and growing business.

What type of person are they looking for?

They are looking for an extremely bright, hardworking and driven Mechanical Engineer. You’ll be interested in working within a fast paced manufacturing environmentand keen to apply your knowledge and skills into a real context. The successful candidate for this role will:

  • Have a minimum of a 2:1 in Mechanical Engineering (sub-sets of Mechanical Engineering such as Aerospace and Automotive Engineering will also be considered but you must possess a good basic Mechanical Engineering knowledge)
  • Have a bright and enquiring mind
  • Have a very practical and hands-on approach
  • Be communicative and eloquent
  • Be highly motivated and able to work pro-actively and independently
  • Be ambitious and driven
  • Be good at working with other people
  • Demonstrate long-term leadership potential
  • Be committed to a long-term career within Engineering with this firm
  • Be flexible to work across the different sites as required

Starting salary: £24,000pa (with potential for bonus – after 6 months)

Start date: ASAP

Length of internship: Six months, with aview to securing a permanent role
