AP French Syllabus

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Advanced Placement French is designed to develop proficiency in French for highly motivated language students and covers the equivalent of a third year college course in Advanced French Composition and Conversation. Conducted primarily in French, this course stresses grammar, involves regular practice of the primary communication skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and has a strong cultural component. APprenons by Wayside Publishing is the primary text of AP French. Une Fois Pour Toutes will be used as an ancillary grammar resource. Through the critique of French films as well as contemporary publications on the Internet and current events in newspapers and magazines, students learn the authentic language of the French-speaking world.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will demonstrate the following:

•  Express ideas orally in French with reasonable accuracy and fluency

•  Comprehend formal and informal spoken French

•  Expand proficiency in reading and writing

•  Acquire a cultural knowledge of France and various Francophone countries

CLASS FORMAT

This course requires active daily oral participation, satisfactory completion of all class work and mastery of grammatical themes. Students will have frequent quizzes, writing assignments and a final examination based on the Advanced Placement French Language Exam per semester. ATTENDANCE

Cuts

Attendance is mandatory. Do not cut my class. You will receive an “F” in citizenship if you do so.

Tardies

The following tardy policy applies per 6-week grading period.

1st tardy – warning

2nd tardy – 1 detention

Each tardy thereafter receives 1 lowered citizenship grade and detention.

The school tardy policy is posted in the classroom and applies as well.

TESTS AND HOMEWORK

Homework will be assigned nightly. No late work will be accepted unless previously discussed with the instructor. If you have an excused absence you have as many days to make up work as were missed. It is your responsibility to ask for any missed work.

There are no re-takes of quizzes or exams because of low grades. All missed quizzes or tests due to an excused absence can be made up during lunch in room B6 the Thursday following the absence.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

•Check your student’s blue homework sheet as often as possible. Students are required to write down homework daily. A complete, high effort assignment will receive a stamp to indicate full credit. An incomplete assignment, or one which lacks effort, will receive an “inc.” to indicate half credit. Failure to submit an assignment will receive a line through the box, indicating zero credit. Students are expected to turn in their blue homework sheets when they are due, approximately once or twice a chapter. Not turning in a homework sheet on time will result in a loss of that lesson’s homework points.

•Grades are posted on Q. Grades are updated every few weeks.

•Please e-mail me at if you have any questions or concerns.
