Foreword

In these rapidly changing times it is important that we are aware of our local history and our heritage. Some of this has been recorded in the Richmond River Historical Society’s Journals and Bulletins over the past 70 years. Some of the names recorded are of those men and women who left their mark on the history of Northern New South Wales.

The personal stories of these everyday people and events are often known only to a few descendants who have lovingly delved into records to glean what facts they could about their ancestors. We are greatly indebted to these people who have spent so much time researching and recording the stories.

This Index is an attempt to place a facility in the public domain for researchers generally. In looking forward we must from time to time look back and remind ourselves how it all began, which is the purpose of this Index.

Bernard Childs, J.P.

Preface

Richmond River Historical Society was formed in 1936. At that time it was mainly concerned with making people aware of the value of local history and historical research through a series of meetings and lectures. Over the years 1936-1938 a number of local and visiting lecturers gave papers and these were later published in two Journal volumes. However, no index was provided.

The Historical Society went into recess during World War II, and it was not until the early 1950s that the Society was reformed. It soon began to publish a Bulletin which recorded everyday activities as well as presenting some historical papers. The Bulletin has continued and in more recent times it has concentrated mainly on presenting articles of local historical importance. Initially no index was provided.

In the early 1980s Miss Emily McBurney, a member of the Society, indexed the Journal and began indexing the Bulletin. This continued until 1997 when her ill health prevented her continuing. By that time she had indexed the Bulletin to the end of 1996 as well as the two volumes of the earlier Journal.

Over the years volunteers and researchers at Lismore have found the Indexes very useful as a research tool. In 2001 I began keying the data to computer and since then major checking has been undertaken and the original seven volumes of Bulletin indexing have been cumulated. The two volumes of Journal indexing have also been cumulated. The Society now feels that it is time to make the indexes more widely available.

Several Society volunteers have been involved in this work. I would especially like to mention Kerrie Alexander, Jan Boyd, Janette Childs, Sylvia Harris, Marlene Lester, Kevin Olivieri, and Cheryl Traini. It has been a very tedious job of checking and re-checking, and I am very grateful to them all for their dedication to the task.

Grateful thanks must also go to the Royal Australian Historical Society for its grant of $500 towards the cost of producing the Index. We hope the R.A.H.S. will find the Index of value.
