Mary Roelli Hilfiker Scholarship

Mary Hilfiker was born in Rice Lake in 1945, graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1963 and from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire (President’s Award) in 1967. She received her Master’s in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Nebraska- Omaha in 1971. Mary worked in the field of education in Madison, WI, Hopi Reservation, AZ, Sitka, AK, the Republic of Korea, Los Angeles, CA (Civilian Employee of the Year) and Twin Cities, MN (Citizen of the Year-Shoreview). Her work primarily included Indian Education with endowments for the Ice Age Trail, St. Paul Foundation and Conservation Corps. Her parents, Hulda and Ernest, valued education and Hulda was a founder of the Rice Lake Area Scholarship Foundation. A graduate of Rice Lake High School and of the Barron County campus may apply for the scholarship to complete their four-year degree.

Application Requirements:

  1. Preference for a female who has been accepted at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire with majors in STEM, nursing or education
  2. Minimum grade point average of 2.75 and ACT or similar of 25 or higher
  3. The student must qualify for financial aid and funds will be granted from the University
  4. A scholarship does not need to be awarded each year
  5. The Rice Lake High School scholarship committee will select the recipient with a preference for a guidance counselor to be on the committee. The University will verify FAFSA eligibility. The financial aid office at UW-Eau Claire will notify renewed scholarship recipients
  6. The award shall not exceed the amount of unmet need and may be less than $2,500.00. Student loans are considered unmet needs.
  7. The recipient must maintain a GPA of 2.75 each term/semester or the funding will be rescinded. The student must always remain a full-time student and the funding will not extend beyond four years.
  8. The scholarship will be for up to $2,500 each year.
  9. As the endowment grows, the amount of funding may increase or another student(s) could be considered.
