RIBA AHR Stephen Williams Scholarship 2018

Background
The RIBA AHR Stephen Williams Scholarship is an annual funding scheme supporting postgraduate students of architecture enrolled in schools of architecture with RIBA-validated courses in the UK and abroad. The scholarship is offered in partnership with AHR (formerly Aedas Architects Ltd), and has been named in memory of Stephen Williams, a past Director of Aedas.
The scholarship aims to support outstanding students who have the potential to make a significant contribution in the field of architecture.
In 2018 one scholarship of £6,000 will support one student for a period of postgraduate studies of up to 12 months in the UK or abroad. The winning applicant will also be given the opportunity of being mentored by a member of AHR staff for the duration of the scholarship period.
Eligibility and selection
Applicants must:
- have graduated from a Part 1 programme validated by the RIBA in the UK, and
- at the time of application, be enrolled in, or have been granted a placement offer for, an RIBA-validated Part 2 professional qualification in the UK or abroad, or
- be enrolled, or have been granted a placement offer, in a Masters course (non-RIBA Part 2) related to architecture, at a university department that also offers courses validated by the RIBA in the UK or abroad
The judging committee will use the following criteria to select the successful candidate:
- the academic achievements of the applicant to date
- the financial need of the applicant
- the future potential of the applicant, as demonstrated by their intentions for their course, and their aspirations for their future career
- the extent to which these plans reflect the interests and professional achievements of Stephen Williams:
-mentoring or coaching in the field of Architecture and/or Architecture education;
-the theory and/or design of the built environment of education and/or cultural spaces, including schools, colleges, museums, foundations, etc.
Preference will be given to applicants who are RIBA members.Employees of the RIBA, AHR, and trustees or members of the RIBA Education Trust Funds Committee will not be eligible to apply for the scholarship.
Payment
The scholarship will be paid in one instalment by cheque from AHR Architects. This will be presented to the recipient in London on a date to be agreed, subject to the recipient meeting the eligibility criteria.

Section 7: Personal statement
Attach a statement on no more than one A4 page that tells us, in your own words, why you would be a suitable candidate for an RIBA AHR Stephen Williams Scholarship.
The personal statement should focus on explaining what you hope to achieve on your course and your aspirations for your future career. If applicable, explain how your academic, professional or research interests encompass the particular fields of professional interests of Stephen Williams.
Section 8: Supporting documentation
Please ensure you have attached the following supporting documents to your application form:
- Up to five pages of your design work (in a PDF at high resolution to be printed in A3 size for assessment). Any more than five pages will not be accepted.
- Proof of enrolment or the offer of a place on your current course (e.g. copy of student card or letter from your registrar).
- A letter of endorsement written by your current or most recent Year/Studio Tutor, commenting on your academic performance to date, and providing evidence of your commitment to your studies and potential contribution to the profession.
- If you have concluded your Stage 1 Professional Experience, you are strongly encouraged to submit an additional letter of endorsement written by your Professional Studies Advisor (PSA) or your Practice Mentor/Employer, providing details of your employment/experience and examples of your performance to date.
- A letterfrom your student loan/grant provider confirming the total sum made available to you in 2018/19. If you have been refused a student loan or grant, please attach a letter from the student loans company confirming that this has not been made available to you. If you are ineligible or did not apply, please explain this in your personal statement.
