COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Honors English 9 is for freshmen who want to engage in active, high-level learning ensuring that they develop the skills and concepts needed to succeed in college. Students will be expected to perform at rigorous academic levels. Students receive instruction in composition and grammar skills, speaking and listening skills, plus a guided study of several literary forms. Independent reading in books from approved lists is expected from all students. Writing instruction will emphasize a variety of common writing forms, such as reports, essays, autobiographical narrative, and responses to literature. Oral work will include short class presentations, small group discussions, and outlining and preparing an oral presentations.
RATIONALE FOR THE COURSE:
This course is designed to:
- Assist students in reading and understanding grade-level and above material and various genres
- Help students to apply knowledge of word origins to determine meaning of new words
- Provide opportunities for students to read and respond to historically or culturally significant works
- Assist students in the process of literary analysis
- Emphasize a command of standard English conventions.
- Facilitate students in writing a coherent and focused texts that convey a well-defined perspective
- Help students deliver focused and coherent presentations

COURSE OUTLINE:
In meeting the State of California benchmarks, the following pieces of literature and writing will be taught. In addition, this course will address various standards from the following areas: vocabulary and word development, reading comprehension, language conventions, literary response and analysis, and speech.
