REU STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Goal

The primary goal of this program is to introduce students to the scientific process.

Summer expectations

We expect you to conduct an independent research project, supervised by a scientist.

You will present your proposed research, both orally and in written form.

You will present your results at a symposium at the end of the summer.

You will write a paper in the scientific format describing your results. You will need to turn in two copies of the paper to the RMBL office. Title pages should include reference to the RMBL, the REU program, mentor name, the year, title, and student’s name on the front.

You should work on average roughly 40 hours/week.

You should participate fully in the REU program, including statistics and discussion sessions.

You should spend 10 weeks in residence in Gothic. Students spending less than ten weeks in residence will have their stipends reduced accordingly.

We ask you to let us know what career you pursue after leaving Gothic (e.g. grad school, med school, alternative careers, etc.).

We ask students to fill out and submit a written evaluation of the REU program before leaving.

Things you should know

You will receive an official acceptance letter by mail, including a packet of information about the Lab.

We expect your mentor to meet with you on at least a weekly basis throughout the summer.

You will need to put down a $100 deposit with the Lab. If you wish to have your deposit taken out of your first pay check, please let billy barr () know. We will subtract any charges you make out of this and return the remainder to you at the end of the summer. The deposit will not be refunded if you fail to check out or if you leave your cabin in poor shape.

You will not receive your final paycheck until your paper is turned in.

If you are having any problems, feel free to discuss them with your mentor, the REU Coordinator, or the Director, whichever is most appropriate.

You will be provided meals when the dining hall is open (June 9-Aug. 18). If you schedule your stay such that the dining hall is not open the whole time, we will house you in a cooking cabin, but you will need to pay for and cook your own meals.

You have $100 to spend on supplies. You will need to turn in receipts.

You should contact your mentor about the dates you will be at the lab before making travel arrangements.

RMBL will reimburse up to $600 of your travel costs. You will need to turn in receipts before being reimbursed.

Once you know your travel plans, please email them to Michele at . She will arrange to have someone pick you up at the Gunnison Airport if necessary.

Your summer stipend will be $3000.
