Training on Retirement Planning at your Desktop

The NPS Distance Learning Center is pleased to offer these excellent retirement planning training opportunities that are free and accessible from your office computer. These courses are made possible by a partnership between the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Please note:Recording is restricted, viewing the live sessions is recommended as you will have the opportunity to ask questions. However, if you are not able to participate during the scheduled times, an online video recording will be made available, between the dates ofSeptember 22-26, 2014. This is a 3-day, 13.5-hour class to be broadcast online via the Livestream platform.

This class is designed for Civil Service employees within 5 years of retirement eligibility to help them better understand federal benefits & make informed retirement & financial decisions.

Topics include Retirement Eligibility, Annuity Computations, Survivor Benefits, Credit for Civilian Service (Refunded Service/Non-deduction Service), Credit for Military Service/Post-56 Deposits, CSRS Offset Benefits

Day 2:Wednesday, Sept. 17:Financial Planning for Retirement, 12:00 - 4:30 p.m. ET

Topics include Assessing Retirement Readiness, Setting Goals, Appropriate Use of Debt, Housing Choices/Mortgage Considerations/Reverse Mortgages, Allocation of TSP and Other Assets, Traditional and Roth IRAs, Life Insurance, Long Term Insurance, Estate Planning Documents and Strategies.

Day 3:Thursday, Sept. 18:Other Federal Benefits, 12:00-4:30 p.m. ET

Topics include Retirement Application Process, Annuity Commencing Dates, Insurance Programs (FEHB/Medicare/FEGLI),TSP-Withdrawal Options, Social Security Benefits

Additional Information for both CSRS & FERS Retirement Planning Broadcasts:

Each individual should enroll, including those who will request the time limited recorded sessions for

September 22-26. You will get an e-mail when the participant guide becomes available, get transcript credit, and will be informed (by e-mail) of any last minute changes to the agenda. The participant guide will be posted approximately one week prior to the broadcast. It will be 200+ pages, so we suggest pre-printing front/back. Pre-printing the participant guide is recommended as this will be a convenient way to take notes and jot down questions.

Broadcasts delivered via the Livestream platform are available on any internet connected desktop computer. If more than two or three persons are participating from your office, we suggest that you work with your IT staff to setup a group viewing area or “distance learning classroom”. This will conserve your office bandwidth and result in a better viewing experience for all participants. For details, please see:
