PREPARING FOR EASTER.

LENT: Lent finds its meaning and origin in Easter, the annual celebration of our Lord’s

resurrection and our salvation. It is the high point of the Christian year.

Lent has become a time for fasting, abstinence, communal and private prayer, self-

discipline, serving others, study, reflection and penance. It is a special time for all of

us to reexamine priorities, to leave sin and self behind in the love and service of God

and neighbor and prepare to celebrate Easter.

ASH WEDNESDAY: In the early centuries, Lent was when penitents

prepared for reconciliation and re-admittance to the Eucharistic assembly. At first,

ashes were given only to those required to do public penance (6th to 7th centuries).

By the 10th century, all the faithful began Lent with the imposition of ashes as a sign

of their mortality and willingness to change their lives.
