Key Responsibilities:

  • Tobethe linemanagerforstaffinthedepartment,ensuring effective performance managementof staff and effectiveimplementationofthePerformance Reviewand Developmentscheme.
  • Toprovide leadership and directionforstaff, in order to ensure an outstanding quality ofprovision within the departmentand highstaff satisfaction.
  • Toensurethateffective induction arrangementsare in placefornewstaff, including adequate support and mentoringduring theinduction period.
  • Toensurethat the College’sexitprocessesarefollowedwith staffwho leave.
  • Toattendthe Curriculum Groupmeetings,contributing tocrosscollegequality improvement and policydevelopment,and toarrangefor a CourseTeamLeaderorother memberof the Departmentstaff torepresent theDepartment when not available to attend in person.
  • Tomeet regularly with CourseTeamLeaders in the departmentinorder to cascaderelevant informationfrom the CurriculumGroup andtoseek the viewsofCourseTeamLeaderson proposalsfrom thatgroup, to sharegoodpracticeand innovative ideas to improve the student experience andoutcomes, andto actionplan to addressanyareasofconcern
  • Tolead onthe developmentandimplementationofthe department’svisionfor qualityImprovement.
  • Aspartof the above,toliaise with Advanced LearningCoachesandLearning Coachesto agree howdevelopment needs toimprove teaching,learningandassessment within the department canmosteffectivelybe addressed.
  • ToensurethatCourseTeamLeadersmeet regularlywith their courseteam members, cascading relevantinformation andseeking their viewson proposalsasappropriate.
  • Tomonitorandreviewthe workofthecourseteams, including thequalityofteaching, learningandassessment.
  • Toensurethat courseteam reviewsarecompleted effectivelyto deadline, and that resulting action plansareagreedand implemented.
  • Toparticipate in Learning Reviews,undertaking lesson observations and learning walks, in order toidentifyand sharegoodpracticewithin the departmentand to identifyanyareasfor improvement.
  • Todevelop strong and effective partnershipswith schools,employers,higher education andother groups relevant totheworkof the department.
  • Tolead themarketing of the department’scurriculuminorder toensure anofferthat ishighlyregardedand attractive to students.
  • Toensurethatall courseteamsinthedepartment have appropriatearrangements in place tocelebratethesuccess andachievementsoftheir students.
  • Tomanagetheprovision ofinformation,advice andguidanceto studentsin respectofthe department’scurriculum.

  • Toimplement the SingleEquality Schemewithin the department.
  • Tooversee theimplementation of the College’sacademicguidanceprocedures by courseteamsin order toensureahighlevel ofattendance, retention andprogressby students.
  • Toanalyse training needsofstaffinthedepartmentandtoplan thedeliveryofstaff training and developmentasappropriate.
  • In collaboration with CourseTeamLeaders, to prepareestimatesforstaffing in the department, to ensurethatstaffinthedepartment arefullydeployed,andto arrange cover forabsent staff.
  • Tohave overall responsibilityfortimetablesinthedepartment. Itisexpectedthat Heads ofDepartmentwill workcollaborativelywith CourseTeamLeadersinplanning course, studentand staff timetables.Wherethe course involves moreonerousrequirements formoderation and internal verification ofcourseworke.g.appliedcourses, the HeadofDepartment should agree with theCourseTeamLeaderhowthisworkbeallocated andcompletedwithin the teaching anddirectedtime available in the course team.
  • Toteachon oneormorecoursesinthe department, achievinghighlevelsofstudent success and progressionforstudentstaught.
  • Tobetheoverall budgetholder for thedepartmentandmanagethedepartment’sresources, devolvingasmuch decision making aspossible tocourseteams. Itisexpectedthat the HeadofDepartment willagree anannual allocation oftheavailable budget to eachcourse team according totheirspecificneedsinanyacademicyear, and will monitorthat this is spentappropriatelyandwithin agreed allocations.
