A registered mental health nurse with 30 years experience of NHS forensic services. A national profile for leadership and innovation in forensic mental health nursing. In particular, making a key contribution to transforming the culture of women’s secure care in the UK. In general, demonstrating leadership in the delivery of compassionate care to offender populations at risk of stigma and exclusion due to their risk and emotional impact on professionals and services. Exceptional skills in the containment of emotional distress, supporting front line staff with the emotional labour of caring and in understanding and working with the dynamics of forensic care. Regular conference speaker. Recently retired from full-time NHS employment.

Women’s Services Specific
Made a key contribution to the transformation of women’s secure care in the UK by applying an attachment theory and trauma based approach to care provision
National recognition for attachment and trauma based nursing approach to the care of women with complex needs who self harm - and related training programme - see chief nursing officer’s review of mental health nursing (2006)
Lead role in the closure of women’s services in a high secure hospital and opening of enhanced medium secure and local medium secure unit for women – employing an attachment theory informed approach throughout the process
Introduced reflective forums for nurses at ward level to address the particular emotional impact of the front line care task
Clinical case load of women – specialising in supporting womenwith traumatic attachment experiences through transfers and transitions on their care pathway
Led the transformation of nursing practice within the women’s personality disorder service from a challenging, struggling service to and effective, specialised therapeutic milieu
