Response to Intervention (click for hot link)

Mission:

Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered approach to help struggling learners. Students' progress is closely monitored at each stage of intervention to determine the need for further research-based instruction and/or intervention in general education, in special education, or both.

Historical Brief:

In 2008 NYSED established a policy that mandated all public schools to take timely actions to implement response to intervention (RtI) programs in its schools. The policy from NYSED for RtI includes school-wide screenings, minimum components of RtI programs, parent notification and use of RtI in the identification of students with learning disabilities.

DMS Accomplishments to date:

2010-2011

RtI was being implemented at KCH.

DMS AIS were in discussion about the implementation of the RtI mandates.

DMS SAT, EXCEL, and CLIC were functioning as identifiers and interventions to struggling students not making progress in the classroom setting.

As of December 2011-2012

All teachers were presented with an overview of RtI on the October conference day.

All teachers in grades 4-6 are continuing their training in Guided Reading and Fountas and Pinnell diagnostic practices.

All students in grades 4-6 were screened and communication regarding their current reading and math level was sent home.

All students in grades 4-6 are receiving reading instruction at their current level of ability in the classroom.

Targeted interventions through our Math and ELA AIS teachers are being delivered to students who are receiving services outside of the classroom.

All 7-8 ELA teachers and 4-6 AIS teachers have been trained in the AIMS WEB screening process.

Future Plans

3 Months -

Meeting with Trish McCarron, administration, and teachers grades K-8 to communicate short and long term plans for RtI.

All students K-8 will be screened in January to determine growth, to develop local student norms, and to inform our future planning.

Parents will be informed of their students level and progress through a written communication.

Ongoing professional development to help teachers deliver targeted interventions.

6 Months -

All students K-8 will be screened in June to determine growth, to develop local student norms, and to inform our future planning.

Parents will be informed of their students level and progress through a written communication and report card.

Ongoing professional development to help teachers deliver targeted interventions.

September 2012

Based on reliable data (AIMS Web and Fountas and Pinnell ) students will be receiving Tier I classroom interventions if they are below the established benchmark. Students not making progress as determined by monitoring and screening will receive AIS services depending on level. AIMS screening and two other data points will determine Tier and AIS placement.
