Why did I choose USM?

In a way, USM chose me. I originally began as a Student Employee at USM cleaning rooms and changing lightbulbs. I was offered the opportunity to become a Resident Assistant in our former Portland Residence Hall, and the leadership skills and unique opportunities offered here inspired me to become interested in a career working with college students. I was very fortunate to be part of such a vibrant and dynamic community here at USM, and eventually became a Program Manager working to support our Community of the Arts Learning Community, our Fire Marshal Program, and our campus-wide activities. I have sought to bring my passion for leadership, community development, student success, and even a little technology into life at USM so that other students have the same great opportunities that I have.

What is my favorite part of USM?

USM knows that its students come from all walks of life, and has adapted to be the kind of school that welcomes everyone to be a part of its success. I arrived at USM as a non-traditional transfer student, and have had classes at the Gorham, Portland, and Lewiston-Auburn campuses. As a professional staff member, I have been fortunate to work with students with a variety of unique challenges standing in the way of their education, from finances to family commitments, to wellness risks or just feeling unprepared. USM provides many avenues to overcome those hurdles.

USM is a place where you can set your mind on a far-flung goal, and with a bit of hard work, you will receive the flexibility and support to navigate there. Give it a shot!

What tips/advice do I have for a new student?

"Be a part of what is happening at USM"

My first semester of college was perhaps my toughest. I remember meeting a lot of fantastic people and had a lot of great opportunities to get out into the campus community, but I recall spending a lot of time in my room with the door closed wondering what to do. In my time since that year, I have seen many students whohave become fantastically more successful and get more satisfaction out of their USM experience by finding a way to get involved. That could be joining a club, playing an intramural sport, joining student Government, or just getting out and being a part of what is happening on campus. Living on campus puts you right at the doorstep of involvement. Don't be afraid to knock!

"Go to classes, and ask for help"

Admittedly, I also skipped a lot of classes that first year thinking that I could just get the notes or that I get by without hearing a lecture. My advice would be to never miss a class if you can help it. If you DO fall behind in a course, don't skip another class out of fear that you are unprepared; you will only fall further behind! USM has a lot of great resources to help you get back on track, including the Student Success Center, tutoring services, and many many wonderful staff to help tackle any obstacle facing you. Ask for help, and challenge yourself to do more to drive your own success!
