Residence in the White House

Procedures

The White House is an academic facility designed to provide accommodation in a scholarly environment for international visitors to Ramapo College of NJ.

Eligibility for Residence in the White House

The White House is primarily designed to provide short-term (e.g. a few days) and long-term (e.g. up to two semesters) accommodation for International Visitors to Ramapo College.

International Visitors who have received an invitation letter for visa purposes from the Roukema Center for International Education and fall under one of the following categories qualify to reside in the White House:

  1. Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTA)
  2. Schomburg Fellows (International) / Platinum Series Scholars (International)
  3. J-1 International Exchange Faculty / Administrator from Partner Institutions
  4. J-1 International Researchers from Partner Institutions
  5. Faculty / Administrator from International Partner Institutions
  6. International Graduate Students from Partner Institutions

Assignments are made on a first come first serve basis. Decisions on assignments are under the authority of the Director of International Education; his/her decisions are final.

Overnight Guests Procedures

Undercertain circumstances, residents may invite one (1) guest to reside overnight in the White House. An Overnight Guest Form must be completed and filed with the Office of International Services at least five (5) business days in advance of the requested overnight stay. A copy of the potential guest’s government-issued ID and proof of health insurance must accompany the Form. The Form will be reviewed and acted upon by the Roukema Center for International Education within two days of receipt.

The following stipulations apply to all approved overnight guests.

  • Any dependents who hold a J-2 visa may be approved to reside in the White House as an overnight guest, in the Resident’s room, for a maximum of two weeks.
  • Proof of health insurance is required for all overnight guests . A plan is available through the College, upon request.
  • Residents may be approved for an overnight visitor for a maximum of three (3) nights at no extra charge. Each additional night will incur a $30fee, charged to the Resident and administered by the Roukema Center for International Education.

Social Gatherings/Parties

The White House Residents may invite colleagues (faculty, staff and students) from the College for social gatherings. Several limitations must be observed.

  • All residents in the house must agree to the time and date of the gathering.
  • Residents are not permitted to invite students to the White House on any occasion except for group activities.
  • Alcohol may not be served to students
  • Students must leave the White House by 9:30 PM
  • Students may not, at any time and under any circumstance, enter a Resident’s room

Check-In Procedures

All White House residents will be advised about the check-in procedure prior to their arrival.

Exit Procedures (long term visitors)

  • The Roukema Center for International Education must be informed of the departure date and time at least 3 weeks in advance (transportation to the airport may be arranged but is not always guaranteed).
  • Check out from the White House must occur within ten (10) days from the end of the semester.
  • Room and kitchen should be cleaned and towels, linens, and blankets should be washed.
  • Pots and pans should be washed and all the food from the refrigerators/freezers/oven/cupboards/drawers should be removed.
  • Any posters, pictures, etc. should be removed from the walls.
  • All bookshelves, dressers, wardrobes and desk drawers should be emptied.
  • All personal belongings should be removed. If not removed by the International Visitor, items will be removed and discarded by the cleaning company after the residence is vacated.
  • Exit survey should be completed.
  • A resident may be charged for any damages incurred during their stay in the residence, assessed and administered by the Roukema Center for International Education.
  • Keys should be handed over to the Roukema Center for International Education (Residents will be charged for any lost keys. Actual replacement costs vary depending on the type of key or lock to be replaced).

Emergency

  • In case of any life-threatening emergencies please call 9-911 (if using an on-campus phone) or 911 (if using a cellular phone or off-campus phone) and then the Office of Public Safety at x6666
  • For other emergencies call the Office of Public Safety at x6666 andthe Roukema Center for International Education at x7533 (during business hours)

Compliance

Residents in the Ramapo College White House are required to comply with the policies and expectations outlined in the Residence Agreement which all residents sign in during their check-in process.
