Research Based Best Practices

  1. Purpose:

In the 2014 Supplemental Budget (ESSB 6002 Section 501(w)), funding was provided solely for the Office of The Superintendent of Public Instruction to create a clearinghouse of research-based best practices for school districts to provide academic and nonacademic support for students while they are subject to disciplinary action and after their reengagement in school. The purpose of this proviso was to create an online resource of research-based best practices for use by school districts.

  1. Description of services provided:

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction conducted a review of existing research around best practices for academic and nonacademic supports while students are subject to disciplinary action and after reengagement. This included many of the best practices developed by members of the Reducing Disruptive Behavior Panel which are clearly marked throughout the final document as LAP allowable items. Districts can use this clearinghouse of research-based best practices to help students, who are subject to disciplinary action or working through reengagement, make a positive transition to school life.

The clearinghouse can be found on the Student Discipline section of the OSPI website:

  1. Evaluations of program/major findings: The Clearinghouse of research-based best practices was made available to the public on the Student Discipline section of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction website in June 2015.
  1. Major challenges faced by the program:Student Discipline is an ongoing issue and continues to be part of the political conversation at the local and national level. This clearinghouse serves as a summary of existing research to this date. It is important to note that best practices are subject to emerge and evolve as new research becomes available. If new research emerges that disproves the effectiveness of a practice that has historically been included in this report, the practice may be removed and no longer allowed under LAP guidelines.Due to no FTE funding past fiscal year 2014-15, there is no immediate plan for maintenance of these materials. In addition, this proviso lacks technical assistance on the use of available resources to support reengagement.
  1. Statutory and/or Budget language:
