Job Title / Equalities Assistant
Contract / Part time, 6 month contract
Department / NUS Scotland (Membership Development)
Responsible to: / Head of Membership Development (Scotland)
Place of Work / NUS Scotland, Edinburgh
Hours of Work / 25 hours per week, Monday to Friday, plus additional hours as required.
Additional Hours / The post holder may be expected to work occasionally in the evening and at weekends.
Salary / £6.08/HR

Requirements of this position:

As this is a Community Jobs Scotland Initiative, the post holder must meet the following criteria:

  • Must not have been in employment for previous 6 months
  • Must be ages between 16 and 24 years of age.

NUS Scotland will provide opportunities for development and training through the 6 month period.

Purpose of the Job

The post holder will support and advise the development of NUS Scotland’s liberation campaigns. This will include support with publications, events and administration, research and creating contact databases. Alongside this supporting the general work of NUS Scotland’s membership development department.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Provide administrative support for all liberation events
  • Support NUS Scotland’s liberation officers in the development of respective campaigns
  • Attend and support NUS Scotland conferences and events
  • Support the development of NUS Scotland’s Community Network
  • Be responsible for creating an up to date contact database

Job activities

  • Development Determine the support needs of each liberation campaign
  • Provide background research on campaign ideas
  • Support the development of liberation committees
  • Development of equalities publications and writing briefings
  • Keeping online information updated

Administration

  • Create a database of officers across Scotland
  • Update current records
  • Take minutes and write up relevant campaign plans

Events

  • Assist in the organising of liberation conferences
  • Assist in the organisation of Community Network events

General

  • Carry out other such duties as may be required to assist in the running of NUS events
  • Maintain a high standard of customer care in service delivery.
  • Attend events and meetings as required.
  • To use IT applications (word processing, email etc) to service the posts administrative needs.
  • To work towards the achievement of organisational goals and quality standards in accordance with NUS’ Strategic Plan
  • To take part in organisational projects as required.
  • The post holder may be required to perform other duties in order to contribute to the overall work of NUS, and to carry out duties on behalf of NUS where specialist skills or knowledge apply.
  • As the post will require handling, processing and recording of restricted information, strict confidentiality is required to be maintained at all times.
  • As the post holder will often be representing the policies of NUS, NUS Scotland and the SEC to students’ associations and wider public, an absolute priority is the need to do so with discretion that ensures the proper balance between the respective roles of elected officers and members of staff.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Experience of creating spreadsheet databases
  • An understanding of liberation/equalities issues
  • Experience of organising events
  • Experience of conducting online research
  • Experience of writing publications such as leaflets and briefings

Desirable

  • Previous experience working within an equalities environment or students’ association/trade union Experience in planning campaign activity

Abilities and Skills

Essential

  • Good oral communication
  • Good written English with the ability to write for a range of audiences.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
  • Strong customer care skills, with the ability to work with a wide range of people.

Desirable

  • Eye for design of publications
  • Creativity and innovative campaigning ideas
  • Ability to analyse relevant research and briefings
