REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION INTO STUDENT TEACHING
Teacher candidates must apply for admission into student teaching through the Department of Education Office by the end of the fourth week of the semester preceding the semester in which student teaching is planned. All applicants must attend a placement meeting. Admission criteria must be met by the end of the semester prior to student teaching. To be eligible for student teaching, a candidate must meet the following minimum requirements:
1. Admitted into the Teacher Education Program. (Separate application is required.)
2. Completed all coursework.
3. Earned a minimum of 12 credit hours at Concord, including 6 credit hours of upper division
work in each content specialization.
4. Successfully completed school-based field experiences.
5. Music Education majors must complete a computer competency test through the Department of Fine Arts. Documentation of passing the competency test must be received in the Department of Education Office prior to the student teaching eligibility deadline.
6. English Education majors must successfully complete a Capstone Exam through the Department of Humanities. Documentation of passing the exam must be received in the Department of Education Office prior to the student teaching eligibility deadline.
7. Attained the following grade point averages:
a. Overall 2.75;
b. 2.00 in General Studies;
c. 2.75 in professional education, with a C or better in each course;
d. The required grade point average for the content specialization.
8. Attained passing scores on PRAXIS II (Principles of Learning and Teaching Test and the
Subject Assessment Tests). Written verification from the testing service must be received in
the Department of Education Office prior to the student teaching eligibility deadline.
9. Candidates placed in West Virginia public schools must complete Form 24 (student teaching permit) to the West Virginia Department of Education 90 days prior to student teaching. Verification of meeting all requirements from the WVDOE must be finalized prior to student teaching.
Note: Form 24 requires fingerprint verification and criminal background check.
Forms will be distributed during the placement meeting.
