Reporting to:Head of Projects
Main Purpose:To manage the Café and to support young people with autism gain the skills and experience needed to apply for paid employment in catering and hospitality.
Line Management:Café Assistant and between 2 and 3 Trainee Assistants (at any one time)

Background:
CareTrade was founded by Katharine Dore OBE and Karen Edwards, parents of young people with autism and vice presidents of Ambitious about Autism. The staff team is highly experienced in supporting adults with autism into the work place.
At CareTrade we do things differently. The main focus of CareTrade’s current work is to enable young Londoners with autism to transition successfully from the classroom to employment and to equip them to lead more independent lives. The majority of all learning happens in real environments and hence building strong and supportive partnerships with employers is a key component of our work.In our first 5 years we have developed four leading employment focused projects (The Autism Project, Employment Opportunities, Access to Work and Weekend Café Project at the School House Cafe).To date we have supported 84 young people with autism.
Our ambition is to enable all young Londoners that want to work to be in work.
AboutThe School House Cafe:
Last year we ran a weekend pilot project at the School House Café offering real work experience placements for young people with autism from Southwark, funded by Southwark Innovation Fund. This was very popular with young people and the local community. With the support of London Community Foundation, Red Nose Day, Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund we are able to re-establish this project and to open up new employment training opportunities to young people with autism from across London. Our primary aim is to help young people to develop skills and gain work experience that will help them towards and into paid employment.
The School House Café is adjacent to Spa School, Monnow Road in Bermondsey. Spa is a specialist secondary school for children and young people (aged 11-19) with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The school runs the café during school hours and provides high quality food and coffee to the community as well as work experience for students. The School House Café is a 23 seat café serving a simple range of food mostly consisting of delicious sandwiches, salads, pastries, cakes and hot and cold drinks. Much of the food will be prepared on site, although some food will be brought in.
Core Responsibilities:
- Management of The School House Café on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the school year (including weekends through half terms and possibly some additional days in school holidays by agreement)
- To work with our tutor to write and prepare training materials for the Trainee Café Assistants (on third day)
- Oversee the training of the Trainee Café Assistants (young people with autism) during work placements at the weekends
- Monitor the progress of Trainees and write end of placement reports
- Line Manage the Café Assistant and the Trainee Café Assistants and report to Head of Projects
- Collaborate with the Spa Weekday Café Manager with regard to the menu (on third day)
- To work with the Spa Weekday Café Manager and Head of Projects to develop promotions for the Café and Community involvement
- Responsible for opening and locking up the café, putting float in till, cashing up and making sure alarm is set.
- Prepare coffee and food including baking bread, cakes and pastries, making sandwiches and salads, cooking breakfasts and soup.
- Restock/refill items as necessary.
- List items that need ordering from suppliers.
- Check stock in fridge for out of date products and dispose of as necessary.
- Customer service including taking orders, serving customers and cash handling.
- Maintain coffee machine including set up, cleaning and refilling with beans.
- Ensure daily cash up form is filled in and money is in safe.
- Ensure café is ready for customers on opening (e.g. tables and chairs out, steps are swept).
- Ensure café is securely locked up on closing.
- Create a welcoming and professional environment.
- To work closely with the school and CareTrade to develop the café.
- To help raise awareness of autism amongst customers.
- To keep the café clean and ensure a high standard of hygiene.
- To ensure food safety guidelines and laws are adhered to.
- To ensure a Healthy and Safe working environment for self, staff, volunteers and customers.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To attend all staff meetings and participate in staff development as required.
- Promote a positive image of autism, the Project, Project partners and organisations and CareTrade.
- Co-operate with all CareTrade and Spa School staff in maintaining good relationships with outside agencies and the general public in order to promote the charity and win increased support for its work
- Co-operate with all CareTrade and Spa School staff in maintaining harmonious inter-personal relationships. Ensure that your conduct within and outside of your work place does not conflict with professional expectations.
- Ensure an awareness and observation of Fire and Health and Safety Regulations at the work place.
- Ensure the respect, dignity and rights to privacy of both students and staff as far as possible.
- Carry out any duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job and the title of the post, as required by your Line Manager or his/her next higher level of authority.

Working conditions of this post are indicated below:-
Place of work:The School House Café, Monnow road, London SE1 5RN at weekends and at CareTrade’s Office at The Clarence Centre, St George’s Circus, SE16FE (near Elephant and Castle)one day a week.
Travel:Not generally.
Hours:It is a 60% post (3 days a week). Saturday, Sunday plus one additional day a week (22.5hrs a week). Candidates must be willing to work every weekend during school terms. This is a minimum requirement.
Remuneration:£ 24,000 per annum pro-rataincluding ILW. Full Time appointment - 37.5 hours per week (52 weeks per year). 4% pension contribution is payable through NEST (subject to conditions in line with government policy) after a successful six month probation period
Annual Leave:5 weeks (25 days) plus Bank Holidays (8 days) pro-rata – for a 60% post this equates to a total of 20 days paid leave a year. Weekends can only be taken off during school holidays. All holidays must be taken in consultation with Head of Projects. Leave can only be carried over in exceptional circumstances.

Pressures Inherent in Job:Running a small community café whilst supporting young people with autism and Asperger Syndrome; who may display anxiety, communication and social difficulties and other complex behaviours.
Other Significant Factors:A professional and flexible approach is required in order to maintain and enhance the reputation of the project and of CareTrade and Spa School.

The nature of the work entrusts people with confidential information about clients/service users, their families and staff within CareTrade and partner organisations.
