Replacement of GMD; Elements for Description of Carrier

REPLACEMENT OF GMD ELEMENTS;

CARRIER DESCRIPTION

The AACR2 GMD is replaced by three elements in RDA:

Content type (RDA 6.9, an RDA core element for the expression) in new MARC field 336

Media type (RDA 3.2, an LC core element for the manifestation) in new MARC field 337

Carrier type (RDA 3.3, an RDA core element for the manifestation) in new MARC field 338

RDA vocabularies for Content, Media, and Carrier type were developed jointly with ONIX. The vocabulary terms may be replaced for display in an OPAC by other terms of a local agency’s choosing or by icons. The terms may be used additionally or only for filtering or limiting searches.

If more than one term is appropriate for the resource, the fields can be repeated; or if all the terms are from the vocabulary cited in subfield $2, subfield $a can be repeated. Subfield $3 can be used to indicate what part of the resource is covered by the term(s) in the $a subfield(s).

The MARC 300 field includes RDA elements describing the carrier and others that give information about the content of the expression. Abbreviations other than those for duration and dimensions are not allowed in RDA.

Comments:

#1. For extent (MARC 300 $a), RDA allows the use of either a term from the Carrier type list or another term; a library could choose to use “CD” or “compact disc” instead of “audio disc” from the Carrier type list.

#2. The abbreviation for “inches” is one of the few abbreviations allowed by RDA (see appendix B.5.1).

2. AACR2

100 1# $a Best, Martin.

245 14 $a The songs of Carl Michael Bellman $h [sound recording].

Comment: Duration, an attribute of the expression (RDA 7.22), is encoded in 300 $a. The abbreviation for “Minutes” is allowed by RDA (see appendix B.5.3).

3. AACR2

110 2# $a ABBA (Musical group)

245 10 $a ABBA gold $h [sound recording] : $b greatest hits.

336 ## $3 DVD $a two-dimensional moving image $2 rdacontent

337 ## $3 DVD $a video $2 rdamedia

338 ## $3 DVD $a videodisc $2 rdacarrier

Comments:

#1. The information in the second 300 field $b in this example represents attributes of the expression: colour content (RDA 7.17) and sound content (RDA 7.18).

#2. A cataloger could choose to give the DVD as accompanying material in the first 300 field (“+ $e 1 DVD”) or give a note about the DVD instead of giving a second 300 field.

#3. If a cataloger chooses to use the term “videodisc” from the Carrier type list, that cataloger could include the information “DVD video” in the second 300 field $b (the information about encoding format in the digital files characteristics element):

300 ## $a 1 videodisc (approximately 99 min.) : $b color, sound, DVD video ; $c 4 3/4 in.

#4. A cataloger can use a term for extent (300 $a) other than those in the Carrier type list. If the cataloger decides to use “CD” rather than “audio disc,” “CD” could also be used in subfield $3 in the 336-338 fields.

#5. If a cataloger doesn’t want to use subfield $3 in the 336-338 fields, subfield $3 could be omitted in those separate fields. Another possibility would be to repeat subfield $a in a single field:

336 ## $a performed music $a two-dimensional moving image $2

rdacontent

337 ## $a audio $a video $2 rdamedia

338 ## $a audio disc $a videodisc $2 rdacarrier

336 ## $a text $2 rdacontent

337 ## $a computer $2 rdamedia

338 ## $a computer disc $2 rdacarrier

Comment: For extent (MARC 300 $a), RDA allows the use of either a term from the Carrier type list or another term; a library could choose to use “CD-ROMs” instead of “computer discs.” (Both singular and plural forms are allowed in extent.) Extent is a core element only if the resource is complete or the total extent is known.

490 1# $a BAR international series ; $v 1328

830 #0 $a BAR international series ; $v 1328.

Comment: The full stop used after symbol “cm” is the ISBD full stop preceding the series area; if no series area is present, the full stop is not used because notes are paragraphed in an ISBD display. The 336-338 fields are ignored when determining if that ISBD full stop is needed.
