As students begin to explore basic information about the United States government, they will use multiple sources to gather and record information about our country’s first president, George Washington. Students will choose an oral, visual, or dramatic way to make a class presentation.

Curriculum fit / Social Studies: introduction to United States government, cross curricular skills will be used in project presentation.

·  collection of picture books about George Washington and other presidents
·  questions keeper (George Washington’s hat art project)

1.  Students will look up the dictionary definition of the word: president. Display meaning on the bulletin board titled: Getting to Know George Washington.
2.  Students will spend one class period “book browsing” from the class collection of picture books about presidents.
3.  Students will create an art project: make George Washington’s hat from a pattern.
4.  Students will cut out 6 construction paper stars – 3 red for questions, 3 white for research answers to their questions and place in hat.
5.  Teacher will present historical information from Primary Sources using the Resource Table. Students will be taught to look critically and discuss what that resource tells them.
6.  Students will use multiple sources and other sources to record information on their Research Record. LOC website.
7.  Students will record research facts that answer their questions on the white stars, staple to the red star at the top, and post on bulletin board after presentations.
8.  Students will write an informative paragraph in first person using the question and answer stars, “Research Record” notes, and Presentation Rubric as a guide.
9.  Students will make an oral presentation to the class wearing the George Washington hat and using an appropriate prop to enhance their presentation.

Research other presidents independently using materials from the IMC, classroom, computer at home and/or school. Compare and contrast today’s president with the first president using a Venn diagram.
