What North Carolina architects are saying about the EPA resources ----

FIRM # 1:Boney Architects: (Architectural firm that designs and constructs mainly schools and has recently begun to take a leadership role in pursuing “high performance” green schools and documenting the results)

Quote --Wade Bevier

“The EPA’s Target Finder tool will be useful to our architecture firm and the school owners we service… It will help establish a benchmark of our schools’ actual current energy consumption and then assist in improving upon the initial energy consumption “target” over time.”

FIRM # 2: Alicia Ravetto (A LEED professional architect who consults on energy issues and teaches the SBIC Energy 10 Tool workshops around the country; she is an expert on daylighting, energy modeling, and sustainable design)

Quote -- Alicia Ravetto

“The EPA’s integrated approach to New Building Design, in tandem with their Target Finder and Energy Star Label, is a winner. After implementing a green charrette and setting early energy-efficient goals for a new building project I was pleased to find that the facility scored a 90 out of 100 using the Portfolio Manager tool and the project is now eligible for an Energy Star label!”

FIRM # 3: Brown & Jones Architects (Architects that are knowledgeable about “sustainable design” and have taken LEED workshops; both partners have “solar” energy backgrounds)

Quote -- Charles Brown

“The EPA’s Target Finder will be a great help in educating ourselves and our project owners about a project’s targeted energy consumption relative to similar building types around the country giving us a fresh perspective on how we are REALLY doing with our projects’ targeted energy use.”

DESCRIPTION:

Southface Energy Institute and AIA Committee on the Environment are hosting a two-hour session on New Building Design sponsored by HOMASOTE. The presentation will cover both guidelines to increase the attention on energy performance issues throughout the design process and a software tool, Target Finder, which rapidly determines an exemplary energy use figure for a new building.

The session will be co-presented/facilitated by Stephen Jurovics and green building consultant Gail Lindsey, FAIA. (Information on the speakers is shown below)

This session will address two areas of design:

1) New Building Design Guidelines: the green/high performance "integrated approach" and energy related issues that design teams should address throughout design, construction, and post-occupancy phases.

2) New Energy Performance Tool --Target Finder: a Web-based software tool to help inform project teams of an appropriate "high performance" energy target for new buildings, based on actual operating data of other US buildings. The goal of this resource is to help design teams make better decisions about design strategies and energy issues. Target Finder is particularly useful for firms that outsource their engineering work, for it quickly gives the architect and engineer an annual energy use goal for whole building energy performance.

The presenters will explain the connection of these new EPA resources to Energy Codes, LEED™, and the EPA ENERGY STAR® label for buildings.

SPEAKER BIOS:

Stephen Jurovics, Ph.D.

Dr. Jurovics, a contractor in support of EPA, manages the New Building Design task for The Cadmus Group, Inc. Under this task, Cadmus promotes the resources and tools EPA has developed to assist architects and engineers in the design of high-performance, energy-efficient buildings. From 1976-1985, he worked on building energy analysis while a member of the IBM Los Angeles Scientific Center. He developed early models to simulate heating, cooling and lighting loads in buildings and derived a model to predict natural light levels in perimeter offices. From 1993-1997, prior to joining Cadmus, he conducted computer simulations of building loads while an independent energy consultant. He has published papers in the ASHRAE Transactions, the IBM Journal of Research and Development, and Building and Environment.

Gail A. Lindsey, FAIA

Ms. Lindsey is the founder and president of the Wake Forest, NC, company, Design Harmony, Inc. -- a leader in environmentally-conscious architecture. Currently, she consults on architectural projects, undertakes green building research, and provides sustainable design training. She is a past Chair of the National AIA Committee on the Environment, former Chair of the NC Green Building Council, and is an advisory board member of Environmental Building News. She has been instrumental in the following: The Greening of the White House, The Greening of the Pentagon, The Sustainable Design Initiatives for the National Park Service, The International Green Building Challenge, the US Green Building Council's LEED Green Building Rating System, the interactive CD ROM - The Green Building Advisor, the Department of Defense's Sustainable Design Training Program. In addition, she helped to collaboratively create the local NC Triangle J High Performance Guidelines currently being used on several NC pilot projects.

Ms. Lindsey is an internationally known consultant and speaker. She has given over 150 workshops and presentations on Green Architecture. Since 1995, she has been an invited speaker yearly at the National AIA Conventions. In addition, she has given numerous presentations to colleges and universities across the country from Yale to Stanford. Her international talks have ranged from Tokyo, Japan to New Delhi, India.

Her firm's work has been published in Green Architecture, in The Ecology of Architecture, and in Green Developments. A Design Harmony project, the Reeves Residence at Dewees Island, SC, was published as one of three case study projects in the Environmental Resource Guide. Ms. Lindsey's own house is published in the book, Human Spaces: Life Enhancing Designs for Healing, Working, and Living.
