Reimaging with Iassist PE/REM Boot CD

Reimaging with Iassist PE or Iassist REM Boot CD

The Iassist CD is an imaging technique that can be used to reinstall the operating system and essential software (Microsoft Office, etc.) on a single computer in a much shorter time period. Typical image times are between 20 to 30 minutes.

These directions are specific to the Iassist Boot CD revision 3.8.

·  The Iassist PE Disk MUST stay in the computer during the entire imaging process.

·  Computers with more than 265MB of RAM (GX270s and newer) can use Iassist REM. This disk can be removed after the imaging process starts.

1.  Boot up the computer that needs to be imaged with the Iassist PE or REM CD.

·  Press F12 during the Dell splash screen at start up. Select the CD drive from the listed devices.

2.  Watch closely after starting up from the CD. The message Press any key to start from CD will appear for only five seconds. Press any key on the keyboard to complete the start up from CD.
NOTE: The Iassist REM disk does not have the “press any key” option because this disk will be removed after the imaging starts.

3.  The PE (Preinstalled Environment) will now load. The screen below will be displayed.

4.  Windows XP will now load from the CD.

5.  A large Baltimore County Public Schools logo will appear.

6.  A series of components will be installed:

·  Registering networking components

·  Installing network adapters

·  Installing networking components

·  Starting “DHCP Client”

·  Starting “Network Location Awareness”

·  Starting “TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper”

·  Processing Network Profile

7.  If the screen under Step 8 does not appear and all that is displayed is the BCPS logo desktop with a Start menu for more than a minute, do the following:

·  Click on Start and select Run.

·  Type the word image in the Open box and press Enter or click on the OK button.

8.  After the components install a command window will appear. The server name for your building and your site ID number will be displayed.

·  The Iassist REM disk can be removed at this time.

·  The Iassist PE disk must remain in the computer during the entire imaging process.

9.  If the machine that is to be reimaged has never been registered with Iassist, the following screen will display indicating that the Image Assist Registration will open. (If the machine has been registered previously, or if has not changed locations, skip to step 14.)

10.  After typing Y, enter four characters to indicate the location of the machine.
Computers are named using the following formula:

·  Start with the letter L if the computer is a laptop.

  1. If the computer is a student laptop, add the letter of the cart, followed by the number related to the laptop’s assigned shelf.
For example, a student laptop from Cart C, assigned to shelf 7 should be named LC07. A student laptop from Cart M, assigned to shelf 16 would be LM16, etc.
  2. If the computer is a teacher laptop, add the number of the teacher’s primary room location (where his/her desk may be found).
For example, a teacher laptop in Room 5 should be called L005. A teacher laptop in Room 223 should be called L223, etc.

·  Start with the letter R if the computer is a desktop. Add the room number in which the computer is/will be located.
For a desktop computer in room 6 the entry should be R006. For a computer in room 219 the entry should be R219.

·  Exceptions:

  1. Library computers are all named LIBR
  2. Front Office computers should be named FOFF
  3. Guidance computers should be named GOFF
  4. AssessTrax Scanner computers should be named SCAN.
  5. IB Student Laptops should be named IB followed by their Asset Number (IB01, IB02, IB03, etc.). Email Kim Samele and/or Hilary Short for more information.

11.  The next line in the command window will contain the proper computer name based on the BCPS Standard naming convention of four characters for the location of the computer, seven characters for the Dell tag, and the four numbers of your building’s location code. This will yield a computer name that is EXACTLY 15 characters long. Double check the accuracy of the provided computer name. Make sure that the computer name is EXACTLY 15 Characters long.

12.  After confirming the name of the machine, and the image, type Y. An Image Assist – Workstation Registration “card” that will appear. Again make sure the computer name is 15 characters long, if not, fix it here. Use the pull-down menu to select the image desired for the machine. (check out the “Understanding Image Choices” document for more information—most of the time, use BASE). Do not select any printers—email Hilary the Dell Tag # of the machine, and the printer(s) you would like installed, and they will appear within 24 hours of imaging. Click the Apply button to save the changes and then click Cancel to exit.

13.  You will be asked to confirm Iassist information. Select N (it will happen automatically in 15 seconds if nothing is typed.)

14.  The next screen will ask what the intentions are for the computer. At this time only use choice “A” - Download an image. This choice will be automatically selected after a 20 second wait, or the letter “A” can be pressed on the keyboard.

15.  The next screen is a warning and confirmation page. The screen indicates that the registered image is about to be downloaded and all contents of the hard drive will be erased. Press the letter “Y” on the keyboard to confirm or “N” to cancel.
Note: “Y” will be automatically selected after a ten second wait.

16.  The RapiDeploy screen will now appear showing the imaging status.
If the Iassist PE disk is being used it must remain in the computer during the entire imaging process.

17.  After the imaging process completes, the following screen will appear asking if you wish to reboot or shutdown. Press “R” for reboot or “S” for shutdown.
Note: “R” will be automatically selected after a 15 second wait.

18.  If the Iassist PE disk was used it can be removed at this point. The Iassist REM disk must be removed at this time if not already done so to prevent the machine from beginning the imaging process again. The machine will start up and go through the normal configurations after imaging. The machine will reboot several times before it is ready to use. The machine can be used when the Press Ctrl/Alt/Delete screen appears.

19.  After reimaging, don’t forget to do the following:

·  Setup access to printers

·  Reinstall software (use RIPs on –fs1, or email Tech Liaison Dell Tag # and software needed). Use the concept map as a general guide.

·  Setup user’s BCPS username as the local Administrator

  1. Have the user login to laptops once inside the BCPS network before taking home.
