2. The process of the diploma procedure on the first course studies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering GUT

As far as the engineer’s degree diploma projects are concerned, the requirements regarding the content and editing are the same for the full-time and extramural courses conducted at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Subject entitled “Engineer’s diploma project” is included in the curriculum of the diploma submission semester of the first course studies. Within this subject a student or a team of collaborators consisting of a certain number of students conduct the engineer’s diploma project.

2.1 Requirements regarding the engineering diploma project

The engineering diploma project (Engineer’s diploma thesis) shall contain a solution of an engineering problem. The students, during the realization of the project, have to provide the solution of a problem specified in the description of the diploma thesis subject. During the realization of the task, each student (on their own account or acting as a member of a collaborative team should display:

- the ability to solve an engineering problem using the current general and specialized knowledge,

- knowledge and skills within the scope of applying the technical solution and modern tools available to an engineer.

The engineer’s diploma thesis shall be supervised by a professor, PhD, doctor or, provided that the consent of the Council of the Faculty is granted, a senior lecturer or a lecturer. Dean, in co-ordination with the Council of the Faculty can grant his consent to prepare the dissertation thesis under the supervision of a specialist from beyond Gdańsk University of Technology. The reviewer of the diploma thesis must fulfil the conditions for acting as a thesis advisor.

The substantial and methodology compliance of the diploma theses subjects proposed to the students with the field of studies where the thesis shall be realized is controlled by the Committee for the field of studies. The department where the diploma is being realized issues a sheet containing the subject of the diploma thesis, signed by the degree candidate, thesis advisor and the Head of the Department/Unit (Attachment no.1).

The copy of the diploma thesis which is submitted for the defence shall contain the following components:

  • Overview of the state of the knowledge regarding the scope of the engineering problem to be solved,
  • Formulation of the design assumptions,
  • Solution of the problem,
  • Complete design and operational documentation.

The diploma thesis shall not be accepted unless the set task is clearly specified and the solution is documented. Documenting consists in systematic presentation of the course of analysis and calculations; design process with the appropriate documentation; documentation of the created computer software; conclusions. Fulfilment of the above requirements shall be confirmed by the signature of the thesis advisor. The Head of the Department/Unit confirms the acceptance of the diploma thesis, while the Dean admits the thesis for the defence. The document containing the guidelines and editing requirements for the authors of the diploma theses (the Ordinance of the GUT President no. 49/2014 of 05.12.2014) can be accessed on the website entitled Quality of Education at GUT.
