Community First Aid and Safety in cooperation with The American Red Cross

Course Description:Safety and First Aid combines lectures, demonstrations and video with hands-on skills training and practice. Upon successful completion, participants earn Red Cross certification, the emergency-training credential accepted by OSHA and public safety agencies nationwide. This course includes:

First Aid
Lecture, interactive video demonstrations, discussions and hands-on training teach participants how to:

  • Recognize emergency situations
  • Check the scene and call for help
  • Avoid blood borne pathogen exposure
  • Care for wounds, bone and soft-tissue injuries, head and spinal injuries, burns, and heat and cold emergencies
  • Manage sudden illness, stroke, seizure, bites and poisoning
  • Minimize shock

CPR Program
Adult CPR

Combining lecture, video demonstrations and hands-on manikin training, this course teaches participants to:

  • Call and work with EMS
  • Care for conscious and unconscious choking victims
  • Perform CPR and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults
  • Avoid blood borne pathogen exposure
  • Know the role of AEDs in the Cardiac Chain on Survival

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can happen anytime, anywhere and to anyone. It claims the lives of 220,000 people in this country every year. When SCA strikes, seconds mean the difference between life and death. With each minute of elapsed time before defibrillation, the survival rate of the victim diminishes by 10 percent.

By delivering an electric shock to the heart, an AED can restore a heart's normal rhythm. Immediate use of an AED, in conjunction with CPR, could save up to 50,000 lives a year. This training teaches participants how to respond to victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Participants will learn how AEDs are easy to use, thereby minimizing response anxiety.
