Military wheelchair basketball players to be coached by former, current NBA/WNBA players

BETHESDA, Maryland—In recognition of Warrior Care Month, wounded, ill and injured service members will play a special wheelchair basketball game coached by former and current NBA/WNBA players Nov. 9 at the Fitness Center, Naval Support Activity-Bethesda from 10:30 a.m. to Noon. The event is hosted by the Warrior Transition Brigade-National Capital Region, an Army unit providing personalized support to wounded, ill and injured Soldiers who require at least six months of rehabilitative care and complex medical management.

Each November, the military honors wounded, ill and injured service members and their families by commemorating Warrior Care Month. Warrior Care Month highlights the resilience and strength of these service members, their families and caregivers.

Throughout the month, installations will host adaptive sports and reconditioning events to educate service members, veterans, families and communities at every level on the value and benefit of adaptive reconditioning. Wheelchair basketball is one of many adaptive activities to help wounded, ill and injured service members learn new skills and promote lifelong fitness and well-being.

The Department of Defense’s work with the NBA includes the league's "Hoops for Troops" program, in which NBA teams honor service members through innovative programming and game promotions, and the Commitment to Service program, in which the league and its teams, military installations and military support organizations team up for community outreach events.
