REECE SCHOLARSHIPS 2017

YEAR 7

BACKGROUND

Dr Alan Reece was a distinguished engineer who, after a varied and highly successful career, sadly passed away in December 2012. Alan owned Pearson Engineering in Walker and developed The Reece Group. The Reece Group continues to expand, incorporating five companies, and has recently acquired the BAE Systems, Scotswood Road manufacturing facility.

The Reece Foundation is based in Wylam and aims to encourage the study of engineering. St Cuthbert’s, as an outstanding school, is working with the Foundation to achieve this aim. They will administer a fund which will be used to award scholarships to students from Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Reece Scholarships will be awarded to raise awareness of careers in the areas of Science, Technology, Maths and especially Engineering (known as STEM subjects). Up to 20 scholarships per year will be available to pupils beginning Year 7.

Each successful applicant will receive £100 throughout their time in Key Stage 3, dependent on the completion of relevant activities.

APPLICATION CRITERIA

(i)Applicants must be in Year 6.

(ii)Applicants should expect to attain an above average point score in Key Stage 2 Mathematics.

(iii)Preference will be given to students demonstrating a commitment to STEM by:

  • Having undertaken a STEM related Project / Activity during Key Stage 2 either at or outside school.

St Cuthbert’s will request the applicant to undertake a STEM related task during the transition period for moving to St Cuthbert’s.

Successful Scholars will be expected to participate in project work with local Engineers and other external providers. They will also act as Engineering Ambassadors for the Primary Engineer Programme.

PAYMENT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Reece Scholarships are worth £100 in total and will be awarded as follows:

  • An initial payment of £30 upon completion of the Year 7 Project.
  • A second payment of £30 upon completion of the Year 8Project.
  • A third payment of £40 upon completion of the Year 9 Project.

Deadline for applications is 23TH June 2017 for pupils in Year 6. Applications can be submitted electronically (preferable) or by post.

Applicants will be notified in September 2017 if they have been offered a place on the Reece Scholarship.
