Needy children lose air-conditioning

WIMAUMA – Three air-conditioning units were stolen over the weekend from a child care center for needy families, leaving their portable classrooms temporarily unusable.

After several hours, teachers at the Wimauma Early Education Center, 5610 DeSoto St., resumed using the portables when electricity had been safely restored.

“Luckily it has been cool enough that we could have children back into the portables,” said Macrina Vega, Area Coordinator for Redlands Christian Migrant Association, which operates the center, along with more than a dozen others in southern and eastern Hillsborough County.

Hilda Leija, the Center Coordinator, said 61 of the center’s 127 children were displaced by the thefts.
